The Air TV Bundle is More Than Half Off

Looking for a deal on the AirTV Player bundle? Now customers who prepay for at least three months of Sling TV, can get an AirTV Player + AirTV Adapter for only $50, (retail price: $129.99). For more information, visit the Sling TV blog.

Here is a look at the Air TV from Sling that I recorded back at CES 2017.

Sling TV this year released their first streaming media player called AirTV. The new AirTV comes from its parent company, Dish, and takes the best of over-the-air TV and Sling TV and puts them in one device along with Netflix

I played with the new AirTV at CES back in January week. It offers a smooth, easy streaming experience, and it always loads straight into Sling TV, making that your home page. Along with Sling TV you can plug an antenna into the box thanks to a USB tuner. When you plug in an antenna it puts your local channels directly into the Sling TV guide.

Now I got my own Air TV to unbox and review:

The AirTV runs Android TV the same as the Nvidia Shield or Mi Box. This allows you full access to all that the Google Play store has to offer. You can easily add more apps to the AirTV for services such as Hulu.

About the Air TV:

  • Marvell BG4CT chipset
  • Supports 1080p HD and 4K Ultra HD
  • 4Kp60 max decode and video resolution
  • MPEG2, MPEG4, HEVC, VP9 decode
  • Internal Wi-Fi 802.11ac 2X2 Dual-Band (2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz)
  • Voice Remote and Remote Finder
  • Dolby Digital/Dolby Digital Plus

I would buy one in a heartbeat if it allowed you to record from the Antenna. That’s a deal breaker for me. Does anyone know if there are plans to add it at a later date ?

Only if they upgrade to Android tv 7.0.

This device isn’t something that interests me but I do think that Sling has the right idea of bringing locals into their interface. I think that PlayStation Vue and DirecTV Now should have found a way to do this as well. None of the OTT services carry any of my local stations but I can get all of them easily with an indoor antenna.

If other services were to bring in local channels via OTA the set up should be more flexible and not require that you purchase a specific streaming device to get the integration. I’d much rather see them take the approach of using something like an HD homerun which can be connected to your home router and then be accessible by a number of streaming devices.

They should have added a “rec” button on the remote, that would’ve been a game changer. Otherwise it’s just another streaming device with a handful of extras.

Does the Sling DVR work with this to record from the OTA antenna plugged into the AirTV adapter? Nothing is mentioned.
