Cutting the cable connection to coax connector illustrating retired people cancelling cable TV serviceOver the last few months, Cord Cutters News has seen steady growth, but in April that growth exploded. Every way you can measure traffic for a site is up including comments and social media with over 72,000 social media followers. Cord Cutters News had an amazing April.

Why is that good news for cord cutting overall? From our experience about one-third to one-half of our readers are still paying for traditional pay-TV services such as cable. We find many of our readers start researching cord cutting up to 6 months before they finally make the jump to dump cable.

This is the area we seem to be seeing the largest growth in, and they are not men. A growing number of our readers are women. (Hopefully that puts to rest the lie that cord cutting is just a bunch of young single guys.)

We are getting ready to see a huge explosion of growth in the world of cord cutting, and this is after we just saw a huge spike.

Recently over 750,000 Americans became cord cutters in the first quarter 2017, but our recent explosion of growth happened after that. Though that growth is consistent with growth we saw in late fall 2016. If this trend continues, we will likely see an even bigger increase in cord cutting sometime in late fall or winter 2017.

It looks like cable executives are about to have a really bad end to 2017 as the estimated 30 million US households not paying for cable by the end of 2017 may turn out to be a low estimate if what we are seeing plays out.

What is driving this rush to cord cutting?

The recent price hikes of traditional pay-TV services are a factor, but the ease of cord cutting finally is making an impact. It’s easy to be a cord cutter. There also seems to be a critical mass of cord cutting across the United States that is spreading the word about cord cutting.

Put this all together and cord cutting may be growing faster than anyone expected.
