DIRECTV NOW Will Soon Stream on Your TV Over AT&T Wireless (No Home Wi-Fi Needed)

It looks like AT&T Wireless will soon let their subscribers stream DIRECTV NOW on their TV over AT&T Wireless. That will allow AT&T Wireless customers with no home Internet to still enjoy DIRECTV NOW on their big screen.

According to Android Authority, AT&T and Motorola are getting ready to launch a new Moto Mod for their Motorola smartphones that will allow you to cast DIRECTV NOW to your big screen TV and stream it from the AT&T network.

All you will need to do is plug in a wireless Internet stick called the AT&T Mobile TV Cast, and your Motorola phone will instantly be able to cast DIRECTV NOW to your TV and stream it using your AT&T Wireless Internet. (Note: DIRECTV NOW does not count against your data cap.)

According to reports, this will be easy with simple plug and play, so no set up is needed. Once the device is plugged into your TV, you can instantly start watching content from your phone.

You also will be able to continue using your phone as it’s casting to your TV. You will even be able to use the new AT&T Mobile TV Cast to mirror your phone to your TV including casting local media.

AT&T has made no official announcement about the new AT&T Mobile TV Cast, but Android Authority has a good track record of breaking stories like this in the past.

Of course maybe 5% of at&t customers will have a phone this will work on. Most are either Apple or Samsung lovers.

And to add to that there are currently only 5 models of Motorola that this will work with. (Moto Z Force, Moto Z, Moto Z Play, Moto Z2 and Moto Z2 Play)

I’ve been wondering, when they say AT&T Wireless data is not metered when streaming DirecTV Now, does that require both subscriptions to be under the same account?

I had created a separate DirecTV Now account (under my name) when I first latched on to the Go Big $35 promo. Wasn’t thinking.

Yet our AT&T Wireless (25GB) family plan is under my family member’s name (since she had corporate FAN discount).

All these months I’ve been wondering if streaming DTVN on the road on our phones had counted against our data cap or not?

    • Ryan Moore

No. It can be any eligible AT&T wireless account — doesn’t have to be under the same name or account holder (for example, a friend could use your phone, log into their account and it wouldn’t count against your data cap).

Note, however, that the zero rating doesn’t apply to use of the DirecTV Now app on tethered streaming devices (AppleTV, Amazon Fire, Roku, etc.). The only way to get it zero rated on those devices is to use a casting from your phone (i.e., Chromecast, AirPlay, etc.).

Wow thank you, very informative! Even answers the questions I didn’t think to ask.

Just make some HDMI LTE enabled Dongle….Casting sucks

  • That’s kind of silly. Just buy a Chromecast.

    • Phuq_Me

Doesn’t that require a wi-fi connection? I know my phone doesn’t let you use wireless data and wi-fi at the same time so how would that work?

  • Vegas Steve

Wahhh? They can’t even get a solid stream on Wifi and they think cell will be better?

    • Bossman

My DirecTV Now streams great over Wi-Fi. Try using a different device..

Or you could use an iPhone and an AppleTV and use AirPlay.
