Hulu Cuts The Price of Their On-Demand Service for New Customers

Back in September Hulu cut the cost of their entry-level limited commercial plan to $5.99 a month down from $7.99 a month. This deal is for a limited time and is only for new customers according to Hulu’s website. After the first year, the rate will return to $7.99 a month.

This all comes a few days after Netflix announced that they are raising their price on their most popular plans to $10.99 a month a $1 increase on both new and current subscribers.

This also comes as many networks are pulling shows from Netflix and moving them to Hulu. Fox, for example, is pulling almost every show they currently have on Netflix over the next few weeks.

Now, this price drop only effects the limited commercial on-demand plan. The live TV and commercial-free plans pricing are unchanged as of this time. This is not the first time Hulu has run a promotion like this. last year they offered a discount on their limited commercial plan very similar to this one.

If you have been thinking of testing out Hulu this may be the perfect time to do it. We are unsure how long this deal will be good for and if it will ever come back.

Update: An earilier version of this story stated that the change just happened. Hulu sent us a clarification that this price changed happened a few weeks ago.

If someone canceled Hulu a bit ago, they should check their email to see if they have been the offered the same deal. Back in August I let the subscription drop (just to take a break). Last weekend I returned for 30 free days + $5.99 for the following eleven months. It’s awesome. So happy I canceled when I did! 😛

I will have to try this as I have my subscription on pause but they only offer me $7.99

      • JoJoTheModern

Wow, immediately? That is awesome! Congrats on getting the discount! : D

I’m a previous customer and received the email today. Probably will do it

  • Hulu sent me an email which said “Offer only valid for new and eligible returning subscribers.” I think it means something like people who last had a subscription more than a month ago.

I’m curious why they only offer discounts on the limited-commercial plan. I’m much more likely to sign up (again) if they did for the commercial-free plan.

I just canceled and was able to sign up again immediately. Though I did have my subscription on hold for 3 months. They wouldn’t offer the $5.99 until after I cancelled though. When you cancel and they give you choices for the reason mark “too expensive”. Not sure if that helps but it can’t hurt.

Maybe they only do this for the limited commercial plan because they raised rates on advertisers.

Well I did not get this but just yesterday I re-signed up for Hulu’s No Commercials plan, I hated the limited commercials, they were so annoying but I watched it last night for about 3 hours and it was great with no commercials. We will see if we keep it but I think between Netflix, Hulu and Amazon you can get anything you want to see.

Re signed up. The deal is for new customers only. Reinitalizing an old account is not qualified as being a new customer. New customer means a different email address.

      • Phuq_Me

        wrong worked for me today.

        • Ottis

I currently subscribe have since the ad free option became available. I resigned up on an old account I use to have and it also gave the discount. I didn’t complete the order just went to check out.

I rejoined Hulu last month and got the 5.99 deal, but I canceled over a year ago.
