Roku Ultra with PackagingLast month Roku announced a new 2019 version of its Roku Ultra and Roku Express. Now we got our hands on the 2019 Roku Ultra early so we could test it out and give you our opinions on the new streaming player.

You can watch our full review of the 2019 Roku Ultra vs the 2018 Roku Ultra on YouTube here:

You can pre-order the 2019 Roku Ultra on Amazon so you can get yours when the October 11th, 2019 release date hits.

About The New Roku Ultra:

The New Roku Ultra will come with an enhanced quad-core process, 802.11ac dual-band wireless, and most importantly it will come with more internal memory. Roku says the new Roku Ultra will launch the top 100 Roku channels 17% faster and when using services like Sling TV, Hulu, YouTube TV, etc it will make loading channels 33% faster.

Roku has also added two programmable quick launch buttons to the Roku Ultra remote. Now you can program these buttons to launch your favorite Roku Channel or to auto-execute any voice command you want.

Our Thoughts on The New Roku Ultra:

The big selling point to the 2019 Roku Ultra was the new remote and the fact that it would be faster compared to older Roku Ultra models. In our testing, the new 2019 Roku Ultra was slightly faster but not dramatically so to make older Roku Ultra owners want to rush out and buy the new 2019 model. What will make you want to upgrade is the new 2019 Roku Ultra remote.

The new Roku Ultra remote includes several improvements that really help the new model stand out. The first thing you will notice is the new remote now includes two programmable buttons that allow you to launch any Roku Channel you want with just a click of a button. Or you can use the programmable buttons to save any voice search you want quick access to. The new Roku Ultra Remote also includes a new mute button that makes it easy to mute your TV when the phone rings.

Final Thoughts:

The 2019 Roku Ultra is noticeably faster but not dramatically so than the 2018 models but the main selling point is the new remote. If you are debating between buying the slightly cheaper 2018 or the new 2019 model we would suggest the 2019 model. If you are happy with your older Roku Ultra you may want to hold off on upgrading unless the new programmable remote is something you must have.
