Air TV 2 5

The Air TV 2 From Sling TV is Now For Sale

Yesterday we learned more about the new Air TV 2 and today you can now buy the AirTV 2 for $119.99 on the AirTV website.

Here is how the product is described:

How it Works

AirTV solves the biggest problems associated with OTA antennas, like wiring multiple rooms and finding the right spot to get the best possible TV signal. AirTV connects with your home Wi-Fi to stream local OTA channels to every internet-connected TV and device within range, so you can mount your antenna wherever it gets the best signal without running cables all over your home.

Take your locals on the go

Don’t have Sling TV? No problem, AirTV also works with the free AirTV app, so you have the freedom to watch your favorite local OTA channels in HD wherever you are.

Get the App now!

Fill your home with FREE local channels

  • Watch local OTA channels in HD on TVs and mobile devices in and outside your home.
  • Set up just one OTA antenna and keep it out of sight and still power your entire home.
  • Set up just one OTA antenna and stream local channels wirelessly to all TV’s and devices at home.

Whole-home OTA

Simply connect an OTA antenna to your AirTV, then connect the AirTV to your home WiFi network. Just like that, you’re ready to stream local OTA channels inside and outside of the home. AirTV uses your Wi-Fi to deliver local OTA channels, which means one OTA antenna will power every internet-connected TV and device in and outside your home. Say goodbye to running cables all over your house!

You would think this would have a dual-band Wireless-AC device built in, not an old Wireless-N adapter. The specs on this unit are no where near as good as the AirTV player. You would think they would be at least similar.

These specs are way worse than the original model aren’t they? Only 512meg of ram???

The new box serves a vastly different function than the original AirTV Player. This is not the “AirTV 2.”

First question I have, do you need to use the Sling App or can you just use the new AirTV app alone?(don’t have SlingTV any more) What about a local channel TV guide?

It looks like you can use the AirTV app alone if you wish. This product is definitely geared toward those with a SlingTV subscription, but it is not required. Without SlingTV you would probably be better off with another solution like HDHomeRun or Tablo.

Why would you need this if you have sling? Don’t they provide basic channels like ABC, NBC etc.

It depends on your area, but yes, some channels like ABC, NBC, and Fox are available with SlingTV. CBS, CW, and PBS are not available on SlingTV in any area, and many locations only have On Demand content for the aforementioned ABC, NBC, and Fox, meaning no local news or sports. Also, SlingTV doesn’t carry any of the sub-channels like MeTV, Comet, and many others.

            OK, that makes sense. Thanks!

If you live in the right market. I only get “On Demand” for those channels in my market.

Well this sure isn’t going to confuse customers… This isn’t the “Air TV 2,” it is simply the “AirTV,” which shouldn’t be confused with Sling’s “AirTV Player.” The original AirTV Player is a box that runs the Android TV platform and outputs video to a TV. This new AirTV is more like a clone of an HDHomeRun box; there is no direct video output. The major feature advantage this AirTV has over a HDHomeRun is that you can apparently get the OTA channels integrated into the SlingTV app. However, so far the AirTV does not seem to be compatible with a DVR solution (such as Plex or Android TV Live Channels).

Well, this is going to confuse some folks. The original AirTV was a streaming box powered by Android TV that you connect to your TV by HDMI. It runs not only the Sling TV app (with OTA channels integrated through the optional USB tuner) but lots of other apps from the Google Play Store like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, etc. But this new AirTV is just a headless network OTA tuner. It does not connect directly to your TV. Instead, it takes the OTA signal from your antenna and sends it via wifi or ethernet to other connected devices, like Fire TVs and Rokus, on your home network. So basically this is like a single tuner Tablo but without the ability to record OTA TV, only play it live. Hard pass.

Absolutely, but this AirTV does have 2 tuners.

Oops, you’re right. So at least two viewers can watch different channels on different devices at the same time. Maybe having 2 tuners signals that they also plan to use that USB port on the back to add a hard drive for DVR. Although you’d think that would have the feature ready at launch (or announce that it’s coming soon).

Just to clarify, I called sling for more informationthis isnt the AirTV 2 its more of a add on to the existing AirTV Player. This does not connect to your tv it only connects to your wifi & antenna so that it can stream your locals wireless to your phone/tablet.

Hmm. Oddly, they don’t list the AirTV Player or Android TV as a supported platform for use with this new AirTV box. You’d think it would be. Maybe they’re abandoning the original AirTV Player and will focus on this new box going forward.

I’m surprised that the AirTV app will work with Roku however the Sling TV app will not integrate on Roku as per what you listed.

Ah. They should list it properly as “Android TV”. And you’d think they’d specifically list their own AirTV Player as supported. At any rate, it’s good that it’s supported. But the whole branding and info rollout on this thing is pretty poorly conceived.

Having this integrated into SlingTV is nice. I might sell my HDHomeRun and go for this.

If you are using HDHomeRun with Apple TV, the Channels app with guide and DVR service $8/month works great. The app is a little pricey but works flawlessly and you are basically paying $8/month for the DVR service/channel guide. I also have the AirTV and although nice, really doesn’t get any Android TV updates and boots into SlingTV even if you do not have subscription (will not go directly into Android TV)

+1 for HDHR + Channels DVR + Apple TV. Until and if Apple creates an all-in-one “TV App” integrated hardware/software solution for this, the HDHR+Channels DVR+ATV combo is the best solution currently available.

This is pretty cool, it’s essentially like a clearstream OTA wifi stick/dongle however you have multiple tuners and if you have Sling TV you can merge the OTA channels with it.

Not sure what makes this much different than the TV tuner stick that you could purchase separately with AirTV in the beginning (and it was a lot cheaper addon)

This is what air tv was supposed to be. A modified Slingbox. Needs a Dvr though. Be careful you will NEED good upload speed away from home.

I’m confused. What’s the difference between this and an HDhomeRun Connect. Is it just the Sling compatibility?

Seem like similar products. The AirTV has a USB port though so I’m assuming that means DVR will be a thing in the future…
