New research conducted by Broadband Now shows that nearly half of the U.S. customers surveyed would be willing to take an internet bill increase if it meant faster speeds. That means if a new internet service like Starlink, Space X’s low latency broadband satellite internet which is still in development, provided faster speeds,, it would have a pretty good customer base already even if it cost more.

Right now the average broadband internet bill in America is $79. According to this research, Starlink could get away with charging upwards from that and still get almost half of current internet subscribers to. switch and sign up.

However, from what we’ve heard so far, Elon Musk has plans to keep the cost of Starlink internet “very low.” Which could be relative coming from the words of a billionaire, but it’s likely the price range wouldn’t be too far off current norms or it wouldn’t attract a customer base.

This doesn’t mean Americans are ok with paying high prices for internet service. Right now, 51% say their biggest issue with their current service is that it’s too expensive. But close behind that, 38% of customers nationwide cited slow speeds to be their biggest frustration, followed by issues like latency and unreliability. Rural Americans had similar complaints, with even more people taking issue with their internet speed.

If Starlink can deliver on its promises, it will solve the top concerns of Americans when it comes to internet – cost, speed, and reliability – positioning them for a successful launch and drawing a substantial customer base.
