Amazon Adds Live TV Streaming to the Prime Video App in Canada in Partnership With StackTV

Corus Entertainment launched StackTV for Canadian cord cutters back in June.  Six months later, the company believes they’re making it possible for a wider audience to cut the cord and still enjoy live TV.

StackTV is powered by Amazon, which brings both benefits and drawbacks with everything from signups to support to content. In order to watch StackTV, viewers have to be a Prime member. While StackTV costs $12.99/month, adding in a Prime membership brings that cost up to $20.99/month for those who aren’t already members.

Because StackTV is paired with Amazon, the service is available on all of the devices that Prime Video is available on. That means built in Fire TV support, but interestingly, no Alexa integration. As Mobile Syrup points out, StackTV users can’t use voice commands to open the app or search within the app.

Bringing live TV to Canadian cord cutters has been the focus of Stack TV. There are 12 networks under Corus Entertainment that have live programming available on the app. Those include:

  • Global
  • Food Network Canada
  • HGTV Canada
  • W Network
  • History
  • Adult Swim
  • Slice
  • Showcase
  • National Geographic
  • Teletoon
  • Treehouse
  • YTV

Watching live does mean watching commercials. However, when that content moves to StackTV’s on-demand section, the commercials are replaced with short ads. Content stays on the platform for 60 days. Mobile Syrup asked Drew Robinson, vice-president of content distribution at Corus, whether there was any kind of notification system for letting subscribers know when content would become unavailable. He replied that there isn’t a way to do that currently.

Canadian Prime Video subscribers can sign up for StackTV with Prime Video Channels for $12.99/month.
