Amazon announced today that it has expanded its local news coverage to include 88 cities across the country. Amazon launched the live and on-demand local news feature in December with 12 cities.

At launch, local news was available in New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Tampa, Boston, San Francisco, and Seattle. Content for those cities and the newly added areas will come from local stations and national sources including ABC Owned Television Stations, CBSN, TEGNA, Cox, The E.W. Scripps Company, and Altice USA.

Local news can be found under a tab on the Fire TV news app, which comes built into all Fire TV streaming media players and smart TVs in the US. You can also access the app by saying “Alexa, play local news” with the included Alexa Voice Remote or from across the room with Fire TV Cube. The app will detect the metro area closest to you, then you can personalize the feature to get the type of news you want to see from the sources you prefer. Amazon will then put together a custom playlist based on your preferences.

“Amazon’s thoughtful expansion of local news content on its Fire TV devices is a strong testament to the power of local news to keep communities safe and informed through everything 2020 has brought us, and everything ahead in 2021,” said Brian Lawlor, Scripps’ president of local media in a press release today.
