Amazon finished 2020 on a high note taking over as the connected TV device sales leader in Q4 according to Strategy Analytics. The total global sales of connected TV devices reached a record 109.1 million in the fourth quarter of last year with Amazon taking the lead in the market for the first time. The retailer finished the quarter with 13.2 million devices and a market share of 12.1%.

Samsung fell into second place while Sony held fast in the third spot thanks to the release of its new PS5 gaming console. Aside from CTVs, Amazon and Roku both did extremely well in 2020 and now make up more than 60% of the streamer market, beating out Google and Apple.

“Q4 is always a strong period for home entertainment products, and in spite of the pandemic 2020 didn’t disappoint,” said David Watkins, Director, TV Streaming Platforms. “Demand for connected TV devices remained strong throughout the holiday period as consumers in most major economies preferred to enjoy streaming video services on their big screens.”
