Amazon is Working on a Conan The Barbarian TV Series

Today it was reported that Amazon is developing a drama series called Conan. The show will be based on the books by Rober E. Howard and the project comes from the Colony co-creator Ryan Condal, Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik, Fargo and The Handmaid’s Tale executive producer Warren Littlefield, Pathfinder Media and Endeavor Content.

Deadline was the first to break the news and according to their report, the show will retell the classic story via a return to the literary origins. For fans of the books this brings hope it will be more truthful to the original material than many of the shows and movies that have come out over the years.

For now, there is no word on when the show will hit Amazon Prim Video. What we do know is Amazon is on the hunt for a big hit show to take on Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and Netflix growing list of hit original shows. Well, Amazon Prime Video has a growing list of original hit shows they have yet to have the huge break out original show. That may change though with the release of their new Tom Clancy Jack Ryan show coming out later this year.

I feel like there are several hundred better options available and that’s just for the comic book fantasy genre …

I’ve always been a big fan of Conan the Barbarian. Looking forward to seeing Amazon’s take on him.

They’ll probably make it unnecessarily ultra violent like HBO, Netflix and several cable networks seem to be doing.

Um… Have you ever read the original Conan? It’s pretty darn violent. Or is your post sardonic in some way?

I guess you’re right, the original is probably pretty violent (I never read it). I guess my point is that everything being made now is very graphically violent. You can have a lot of violence and not be so graphic.

The 10:00 news is pretty violent. So is the front page of the newspaper.

I hope they take the time to really develop the character versus simply thrusting him into the storyline. I always thought there was more to Conan than the movies showed (although the first one did do a pretty decent job). There is so much material out there they could be making this show for years if it is good enough.
