Today it was announced that Apple Music will be launching on Amazon’s Alexa powered Echo devices in mid-December 2018. Apple Music offers access to 50 million songs currently through iTunes, iOS, and Android devices. The addition of Amazon Echo support will dramatically expand the lineup of supported devices.
Apple has a competitor to the Amazon Echo starting at $349 a huge jump compared to the typical $49.99 starting price of an Echo. Apple music starts at $4.99 a month for students, $9.99 a month for individual plans, and $14.99 a month for family plans.
Apple is likely facing stiff competition from rival music services. Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube Music, and more. Expanding to more non iOS devices is a huge step for Apple to stand up against a growing number of competitors. According to Apple, their music streaming services hit 50 million subscribers in early 2018 but this is still well behind the 83 million paid Spotify subscribers announced in July 2018.
This is also a huge win for Amazon as they are also facing new competition from Google in the world of smart speakers. With the addition of Apple Music, the Amazon Echo has one more service Google’s Home is still unable to support.
