Yesterday Apple started to roll out the fourth beta version of their Apple TV tvOS 11.3 beta to developers. While this may not be available on your Apple TV today, it gives us some insight into the future of the Apple TV.

Some of the new features include Match Content Support and automatic frame rate switching on the fourth generation Apple TV. The 4K Apple TV already has a few of these options. This beta brings them to the older fourth generation Apple TV.

What does automatic frame rate switching mean? It means your Apple TV will match the frame rate of the content you are watching. For example, if you have your Apple TV set to 60fps (frames per second) but the show is only 30fps it will switch to 30fps to offer the best possible viewing experience.

Here is the description for how this works on the Apple TV 4K:

*Apple TV 4K will match the frame rate of content encoded at 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24fps. Frame rates will match the refresh rate appropriate for your region, for example, 29.97fps for NTSC. 25fps and 30fps content uses frame rate doubling to display at 50Hz and 60Hz when available, matching its original appearance while preserving a fluid user interface.

One thing we are unsure about at the time of writing is the Air Play 2. In an earlier beta Apple introduced a new Air Play 2 that made some back end improvements to how the Air Play works. It was later removed, and we are unsure if it was added back in for this beta.

For now it looks like Apple is getting closer to a major new update to the Apple TV.
