“AT&T is donating $500,000 to non-profit advocacy group Sports Fans Coalition NY (SFCNY), which operates the Locast public service app that offers users access to local broadcast TV stations via the Internet. This donation will support SFCNY’s mission to make free broadcast content available to consumers and offer them more choice.” AT&T said in a statement sent to Cord Cutters News.
Locast is a live TV streaming service that launched back in January 2018 in New York City to offer access to 15 stations including ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. Recently Locast has been rolling out to new markets including South Dakota. Don’t look for Locast to stop there, according to the people behind the service they plan to keep expanding into other markets later this year. With Locast you can stream ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC among others for free in Denver, Washington DC., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, New York, and South Dakota.
AT&T also recently announced that they are adding Locast to their DIRECTV and U-verse TV boxes. This will give AT&T subscribers in Locast supported markets access to free local channels streaming through their cable box. AT&T’s move to add Locast to DIRECTV NOW and U-verse gives AT&T more leverage when negotiating with local TV stations. Now if there is a blackout, AT&T customers in several major markets can just switch over to Locast to continue enjoying their local TV.
