This week John Donovan, CEO of AT&T Communications opened up about the companies future plans for DIRECTV NOW at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference.

During the talk, John Donovan opened up about their plans to move away from satellite services to streaming in order to “taking cost out of getting to the home.” With a satellite new customer, a truck needs to roll to the house expensive equipment needs to be installed and a tech needs to pay. Plus AT&T needs to keep techs all over the United States ready to be ready for a new customer install request.

With Streaming AT&T has no need for equipment, techs, or trucks. This greatly cuts back on the costs to add a new customer. Yet don’t expect this to happen overnight. He went on to say this would be a slow process.

John Donovan went on to say “We need more flavors of DIRECTV NOW.” What exactly that means we don’t fully know at this time. We do know AT&T plans a home-centric version of DIRECTV NOW with an Android TV powered box that users can buy and install in their home. Will there be other “flavors” well its very likely but we will have to wait and see.

Maybe the most interesting statement for the here and now was “our TV product is not there yet,” John Donovan said. Hopefully, that means AT&T has a roadmap to continue to improve their DIRECTV NOW streaming service.
