CBS All Access Is Adding More Star Trek Shows

Recently CBS announced that this fall they will be releasing a set of short standalone Star Trek episodes called Short Treks. These 10 to 15-minute episodes will focus on key characters from Star Trek Discovery and the Star Trek Universe as a whole and be available exclusively on CBS All Acces.

“Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes,” said Alex Kurtzman. “They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.”

This seems to be part of a bigger push from CBS to create more exclusive content for CBS All Access. CBS is hoping that they can turn CBS All Access from something people subscribe to a few months a year into a year-round subscription by offering more content.

With the growth of local CBS on a growing list of streaming services—from Hulu to fuboTV—it removes the selling point of CBS All Access having the live local. CBS now needs to find other ways to attract subscribers, and more Star Trek seems to be the first step.
