As National Hispanic Heritage Month kicks of September 15, Documentary+ is celebrating with a curated collection of documentary features, short films and docuseries showcasing Hispanic leads and stories following this year’s theme of “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope.”

The collection includes 5 documentary features, 2 short films, and a docuseries, including GLAAD award-winning documentary Southwest of Salem directed by Deborah Esquenazi and Us Kids, produced by XTR and directed by Peabody Award-winner Kim Snyder.

The collection begins streaming Wednesday, September 15. Documentary+ is available for free on all streaming platforms including Apple TV, Amazon and Roku, mobile devices and on the web.

FEATURE FILMS

US KIDS: From Peabody Award-winning director, Kim A. Snyder, comes an insightful, rousing coming-of-age story of a generation of youth leaders determined to take the reins and fight for justice at a most critical time in our nation’s history. Sparked by the plague of gun violence ravaging their schools, Us Kids chronicles the March For Our Lives movement over the course of several years, following X Gonzalez and Samantha Fuentes, its co-founders, survivors and a group of teenage activists as they pull off the largest youth protest in American history.

RESIDENTE: After taking a DNA test, Latin America’s most decorated musician, Rene Perez Joglar, AKA Residente, embarks on an epic global adventure to trace the footsteps of his ancestors and record his latest album. As Residente examines his heritage through an engrossing exploration of culture, history, and injustice around the world, he learns that we are truly all connected. 

THE AGRONOMIST: Directed by Academy Award-winner Jonathan Demme, THE AGRONOMIST captures the intimate story of Haitian radio host and human rights activist, Jean Dominique, whose voice inspired the spirit of the Haitian Revolution.

SOUTHWEST OF SALEM: A modern version of the Salem witchcraft trials, this Emmy-nominated, Peabody-winning documentary follows the story of four Latina lesbians wrongfully convicted of gang-raping two little girls in San Antonio, Texas. Director Deborah S. Esquenazi transcends her role as a filmmaker, becoming an investigator alongside attorneys at The Innocence Project.

STEALING RODIN: Stealing Rodin tells the unforgettable story of the greatest art theft in Chile’s history. In 2005, the Palace of Fine Arts in Santiago, hosted a collection by celebrated French sculptor Auguste Rodin. The morning after the exhibit’s opening, museum guards were dismayed to find that one of the Rodin pieces had gone missing. The “theft” turned out to be a provocative statement, masterminded by a precocious art student. His actions sparked a public outcry and a furious debate on the nature of art itself.

SHORT FILMS

DOCUSERIES

THE LAST SHOT: Vice series following American and Mexican basketball players whose careers have been derailed, as they compete in underground, cash-prize Mexican tournaments in search of one last opportunity to make a living playing the game they love.
