Yesterday several readers contacted Cord Cutters News to notify us that DIRECTV NOW has added WCYB, an NBC affiliate, and WEMT, a FOX affiliate, in the Tri-Cities TN/VA area. What is interesting about this is DIRECTV NOW is expanding into Sinclair-operated but not owned affiliates.

Sinclair not only manages locals they own but also locals owned by other companies. In this case, WEMT is owned by Cunningham Broadcasting but is run by Sinclair. All but one of Cunningham Broadcasting owned stations is run by Sinclair with WYZZ-TV being operated by Nexstar Media Group.

Cunningham Broadcasting owns 20 local affiliates that will likely be live on DIRECTV NOW soon. This should put DIRECTV NOW over the 300 live local channel mark putting it in a tight race for second place with YouTube TV, FuboTV, and PlayStation Vue just behind Hulu with their more than 400 live locals.

This lines up well with news from Sinclair and Nexstar, two of the largest affiliate owners that announced deals with several live TV streaming services late last year. “Nexstar now has reached mutually satisfactory agreements with three of the big four networks for participation in OTT services,” said CEO Perry Sook in a statement.

Although that deal was announced last year, it takes time to connect a station to a service like DIRECTV NOW. The feed is different than the one used for DIRECTV, and it requires equipment installation and a secure connection to prevent piracy.

If you found a new live local please leave us a comment and let us know what local was added.

Slowly DIRECTV NOW, Hulu, PlayStation Vue, YouTube TV, fuboTV, and other services are adding more locals. Look for this to continue in the weeks and months to come.
