directv now streaming box

Today DIRECTV NOW started to ship their new streaming players to select subscribers according to several readers and a post on Reddit.

This new device is likely to be used for both DIRECTV NOW and a new DIRECTV streaming version AT&T announced last year. The device is an Android TV-powered streaming player called Osprey. (AT&T is very likely to change the name before release.) It is very likely this will be the set-top box for the reported DIRECTV streaming version. According to reports AT&T wants to offer a streaming version of DIRECTV that will offer the same contracts and channels but without the dish on your house. (Removing the need to send a tech to your house or pay for an expensive satellite in space.) For now, they are likely using DIRECTV NOW to test it and will likely also offer it as an option for DIRECTV NOW customers.

Here is the email sent to selected DIRECTV NOW customers who have been selected for beta testing:

Thanks for signing up for the beta test of our brand-new streaming device. We think it’s pretty great–your help is going to make it even better!

Your device will arrive soon, and once it does:

Easy-to-follow instructions will be included inside the package.

Watch live TV and content from your favorite streaming apps. The beta test will run about 6 months, and you’ll need to keep your DIRECTV NOW account active during that time to continue as a beta tester.

You’ll be able to share your experiences in our User Voice forum (invite coming soon!). We’ll also send you short surveys about once a month.

Disclaimer:

*The streaming device is provided on an “as is” basis and does not come with a warranty. While we are under no obligation to repair or replace the device should it become inoperative during the beta period, we may at our own discretion replace a defective device should supplies last.

If you applied for the beta go check your email and see if you are one of the lucky subscribers to get a test unit.
