Channel Surfing ManThis week DIRECTV NOW started emailing some subscribers notifying them of new email rules and the need to update their email address.

Here is the email sent to some subscribers:

We’ve increased our technology requirements to give you an even better streaming experience going forward. Unfortunately, the email address that you currently use for your DIRECTV NOW app does not meet these requirements. Email addresses with the following domains listed below are no longer supported by DIRECTV NOW.

att.net
nvbell.net
snet.net
ameritech.net
pacbell.net
swbell.net
bellsouth.net
prodigy.net
wans.net
flash.net
sbcglobal.net

Please substitute the email address on your account in order to keep using our app. Before you select a new email address, please note we can only accept addresses with the following characters:
• The letters “A” through “Z” (upper and lower case)
• The numbers “0” through “9”
• Periods (.)
• Underscores ( _ )
• Dashes (-)
• The “at” symbol ( @ ), but only when it joins the username and URL address

Emails that contain any other characters will, unfortunately, not be accepted. Please update your DIRECTV NOW login as soon as possible.

Thank you, and keep streaming.

Sincerely,
Your DIRECTV NOW Team

The big question now is why the change. As best we can tell it looks like they are cutting off legacy services that AT&T used to own and a few older ones too.
