DIRECTV NOW Starts Beta Testing The New App on Roku Players

Today AT&T started rolling out invites to test the DIRECTV NOW app beta on Roku players. Now this is just testing the app not the DVR.

According to the emails going out the DVR will come later. “The True Cloud DVR is not available for Roku devices yet. We’ll let you know when it’s ready for Roku device testing. In the meantime.” The email goes on to say “You can stream live channels and on-demand content. · You can set recordings from your Roku device, but at this time you can’t view your playlist or playback any recordings on it.”

Here is the new Roku Channel running on a Roku.

Now, as best we can tell only a handful of invites have gone out to a few lucky beta testers.

Now I am sure the link to the beta will be made public soon. Just remember DIRECTV NOW has locked down the beta to invited testers only. So installing it on your Roku right now will just take up space.

DirecTV Now is a mess! I’ve gotten an invite to test out the DVR and I have not been able to get it to work on the Fire TV. Complete waste of time. Good thing I’m still on a free trial.

To clarify, do you need a NEW beta invite for Roku? Or our old beta invite (for iOS, Android, etc.) will now enable a new Roku beta app?

If you chose Roku as an option on your active invite, you wont need to submit for a new invite. However, the procedures for acquiring the beta apps for each device are different. If they approve you for testing this device, they will send an email with specific directions.

Why don’t we fix the app to actually stream and not buffer all the damn time. Hopefully the DVR picks up the blue circle, That would be awesome. This way we can feel like we are truly watching in real time.

What’s the point of putting out the beta app if there is no DVR on it? So we can experience even more errors and other problems compared to the regular app and the nasty white background? Come on, this has been ridiculous for a while now.

DVR is worthless again anyway. This week’s update took away the ability to fast forward through shows, so I’ll never buy the service past Beta stage unless that gets fixed. It was working pretty good for me on Apple TV until this week.
