Channel Surfing ManToday AT&T reported their 1st quarter 2018 numbers giving us a fresh look at how DIRECTV NOW is doing. According to AT&T DIRECTV NOW has reached 1.46 million subscribers as of March 2018.

The gains DIRECTV NOW saw helped offset the losses in their traditional pay TV services. In the 1st quarter of 2017, AT&T had 25.37 million TV subscribers. Now in the 1st quarter of 2018, AT&T had 25.36 showing how vital DIRECTV NOW’s growth has been for AT&T.

“Our investment in customer growth and our integrated service offerings helped drive solid first-quarter subscriber gains across our wireless, video and broadband businesses,” AT&T chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson said during the 1st quarter earnings call.

AT&T has been pushing hard for new subscribers recently. From discounted pricing for AT&T Wireless customers to device deals if you are willing to prepay for DIRECTV NOW.

Recently AT&T announced they play to launch a $15 a month version of DIRECTV NOW that will be free to AT&T wireless customers. This new service will be priced at $15/month and be a sports free version of DIRECTV NOW. According to Mr. Stephenson, the service drops sports programming and will focus on other channels similar to how Philo works. The hope is the service will appeal to a more budget-conscious streaming audience. It will be interesting to see how AT&T’s $15 a month TV service will help them grow in the months to come.
