Discovery’s CEO Thinks Their New Streaming Service Could Top 100 Million Subscribers

Recently the race for streaming subscribers has become very heated. A growing number of services are launching and fighting for your streaming dollar. This week Discovery’s CEO David Zaslav was very candid when talking about Netflix recently topping 100 million subscribers.

“I believe the next one to get to 100 [subscribers] is not going to be another scripted and movie player. There’s just too many of them. Another one of those? What’s the difference?” Zaslav asked. “What we have is different, it’s quality and it’s safe. What mom around the world wouldn’t say that they want what we have to offer? So if we look at how we go direct-to-consumer, going global or going regional, doing something with one of the FAANG companies or doing something ourselves; all of that looks attractive to us because we think the marketplace is very crowded and that the understanding of what each of those [services] means is melding together and you’re starting to see a lot of the same stuff. And we’re different.”

Clearly, after looking at David Zaslav statements over the last few months, he believes that Discovery has something special that millions of Americans will want to subscribe to. The question now is will the general public think Discoveries streaming service is worth $6 a month and if they really are all that different. It will also be interesting to see how streaming services react to Discoverys move to launch their own competing service.

This all comes after David Zaslav opened up about Discovery’s plans to launch their own streaming service back in March. “We will be looking hard at that both domestically and internationally,” said Zaslav. “We could create a pretty compelling offering for $6, $7 or $8 that would look a lot different than Amazon Prime and Netflix, and it could be very attractive in every language globally. So we’ll keep our eye on that.”

So what do you think? Does Discovery have an opportunity to launch a streaming service that would attract 100 million subscribers? Leave a comment and let us know what you think..
