How to setup your parents to be cord cutters with a Mohu Leaf and a Roku.

Over the weekend I went to see my parents so I could help them cut the cord and become cord cutters. They do not watch a lot of live TV having already falling in love with their Roku and Netflix earlier this year.

They have been paying Comcast $20 a month for 20 channels all in SD. They received local channels like ABC and FOX with channels like the TV Guide channel and shopping networks. After hooking up the Mohu Leaf Antenna they received 24 channels most of them in great HD quality. With more channels that they actually want to watch.

Before we decided to even try hooking up the Antenna we used Mohu free channel finder and antenna recommender. It let us know what channels we should receive and what antenna we should buy. You can find the channel finder here: http://www.gomohu.com/tv-for-free-front/

The setup took less than 20 minutes. The Leaf came with a 16ft cable which helped us run the antenna to a spot in the room that received great reception. The paper thin antenna sits on the wall in the very corner of the room. You would not notice it if you were not looking for it.

My parents had been skeptical about reception and not losing their current channels. So we decided to do two things. First we did not cancel cable right away. They are going to try out the antenna for a month first. Second I told them if it didn’t work I would buy the antenna from them and use it myself. That settled any concerns they had.

For Netflix and Amazon Instant they have a Roku 1. I went with the Roku because of its ease of use. We wanted something simple and the quick buttons for Netflix and Amazon on the remote was a huge selling point for my parents. It only cost $39.99 on Amazon with free Prime shipping. For the Antenna we went with the Mohu Leaf 50 antenna and it only cost $69.99. My parents wanted something that looked nice and worked well. So the Mohu Leaf was perfect no need to hook something up outside and no huge ugly antenna that my mom would never allow in their house. Mohu Leaf 50 Amplified Indoor HDTV Antenna

Total cost was $109.98 with a yearly savings of $240 every year. In less than 6 months they will be saving money on this deal. Assuming Comcast never raised their bill over 10 years they will save $2,400. Money they can now be used for a nice vacation.

One last tip if you want someone to be a cord cutter get them hooked on Netflix. That made this a lot easier for them as they watch Netflix 90% of the time. Now two more people are cord cutters in my family. How many people have you setup as cord cutters?
