How to Watch HBO With Your Friends in Quarantine With a Browser Extension

Miss the days of watching TV with your friends? Now you can host a virtual watch party for HBO shows with up to 20 of your friends simply by using a Chrome browser extension. Scener is a virtual movie theater that syncs streaming services with friends and lets you watch and video chat together during the show.

The Seattle based start-up has been around since 2018 and Scener’s free extension works with Netflix and other streaming services, most recently adding support for HBO Now and HBO Go viewers to co-watch together. So far, there’s no confirmation on whether the extension will be supported on HBO Max.

“COVID-19 has highlighted the need to connect virtually with loved ones, and Scener’s partnership with HBO provides a fantastic way to interact,” said Joe Braidwood, co-founder and COO of Scener. “By combining the worlds of live video chat and streaming entertainment, Scener makes it easy for viewers to enjoy one of our most beloved pastimes — watching TV together — from a safe distance.”

The Scener Virtual Movie Theater is a free Chrome extension that synchronizes playback for you and your friends. It features sidebar that lets you video chat and chat with your friends. All viewers in the watch party need to have their own subscription to the streaming service you’re watching, and the Google Chrome browser extension is compatible with Macs, Windows PC, and Chromebook.
