The 50th season of the longest-running game show in television history is underway, as The Price Is Right is celebrating this milestone with a two-hour primetime special. During the special, the Daytime Emmy-winning game show will be looking back at the biggest winners, never before seen outtakes, and a salute to former host Bob Barker, who hosted the show for 35 years.
“First, I want to say congratulations and thank you to all the wonderful people responsible, past and present, on the 50th season of The Price Is Right,” said Barker. “The show has the most enthusiastic and fun audience that one could ever ask for. They truly were and are the heart and soul of the show.”
Over the show’s five decades, there have been more than 68,000 contestants that have “come on down” and played The Price Is Right with over 2 million members in attendance at Studio 33 (renamed Bob Barker Studios in 1998) in Television City Studios, Los Angeles, California, where the show has been filmed for its entire run except for the 30th anniversary. Season 50 will have a limited audience of 50 pods due to the ongoing pandemic.
Barker continued: “ I had the pleasure of working with a dedicated and talented cast and crew for 35 great years. Particularly close to my heart was the ability our vast popularity gave me to remind our entire audience daily about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets. It was an incredibly memorable ride! Once again, congratulations to The Price Is Right on 50 historic years!! Here’s to 50 more!!”
Barker retired from hosting the show in 2007 and was succeeded by Drew Carey. The show has continued to be a critical and rating success under Carey, as it is continuously one of the most-watched daytime shows throughout the week and has filmed over 9,300 episodes with more than 63,000 spins on the Big Wheel over the length of its run.
“Hosting The Price Is Right has been a dream job for me,” said Drew Carey. “I really never thought my safe space would be on a soundstage, wearing a mic, cameras on me constantly, and with millions of people watching. But that’s what ‘The Price Is Right’ is for me. I love it.”
In a throwback to the show’s first season, season 50 will feature a new game called “Back to ‘72.” The game will be played throughout season 50 and it will have a retro ‘70s look, as contestants test their pricking skills on actual items that appeared on the show during the early years of its run on CBS.
