You may already know that Hulu offers various on-demand and live TV plans. But is it possible for you to also add on extra channels? The simple answer is ‘yes.’ Hulu lets you customize your experience with additional channels and premium upgrades. So, if you’re someone who’s looking to beef up your Hulu subscription, you’re in luck.

As one of the largest streaming giants, Hulu’s vast reach makes many of your favorite channels readily available to you. Hulu has surged in popularity within the past year alone. Thanks to its recent acquisition by Disney, it now has over 32 million subscribers. This, in part, may have something to do with Hulu’s addition to the Disney Plus bundle alongside ESPN+

You can check out more in-depth Hulu on-demand or Hulu + Live TV reviews, but to learn everything you need to know about Hulu’s premium channels and more, keep reading.

What is Hulu?

Hulu starts at $5.99/mo. for a basic on-demand subscription and grows from there. However, if you don’t want commercials but fancy offline capabilities, Hulu (No Ads) costs $11.99/mo. Hulu offers a Live TV option for $64.99/mo. And its on-demand ad-free alternative Premium + Live TV priced at $70.99/mo.

Hulu works pretty simply. But make sure you have a healthy Wi-Fi connection. Hulu’s website recommends speeds of at least 3.0 Mbps and 16.0 for 4K content. Once you sign up and pay for your subscription, download the app to the device from which you’d like to watch. The Hulu app is supported by casting devices, game consoles, smartphones, and smart TVs. Once downloaded, open the app and start watching your favorite content.

What premium channels are offered on Hulu?

Just like many cable-alternative services out there, you have the option of building upon your plan with additional channels. That means you can punch up any of Hulu’s subscriptions with premium channel add-ons. There are 4 popular options: Cinemax, HBO Max, Showtime, and Starz

Cinemax (+$10/mo.)

With the Cinemax premium channel add-on, you’ll get access to popular movies and original series like Banshee, Jett, and The Knick. In addition, there are exclusive behind-the-scenes (BTS) programs and clips of your favorite Cinemax content.

HBO Max (+$15/mo.)

The HBO Max add-on provides you with all of HBO’s library, including documentaries, movies, and original series. So, your favorite HBO originals like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Game of Thrones, Sopranos, The Wire, along with other fan favorites, are all at your fingertips. And with HBO Max, you’ll even get content that’s not accessible with a regular HBO subscription. HBO Max offers licensed and original content like Adventure Time, Friends, Looney Tunes, and Search Party

Showtime (+$11/mo.)

Showtime comes with award-winning exclusive content, movies, and even some sports. Stream your favorite Showtime hits like Billions, Homeland, Ray Donovan, and Shameless or tune into top-tier championship boxing events. There are also live feeds available for select supported devices.

Starz (+$9/mo.)

Starz is the most affordable premium channel add-on. Whether you’re in the mood for Hollywood classics or that new blockbuster movie, Starz constantly updates its library with the most sought after titles. Starz also comes with a few original series like Outlander and Power

Hulu feature add-ons

Most of Hulu’s feature add-ons exclusively apply to its live TV packages (Hulu + Live TV and Premium + Live TV). These add-ons improve the quality of your experience, making Hulu a formidable cable-alternative option. There are competitors who offer similar features. However, they lack Hulu’s on-demand library.

Hulu’s live TV packages also let you improve your features to better suit larger families. For instance, if the 50 hours of Cloud DVR storage that comes with Hulu + Live TV aren’t enough, then you have the option of upgrading to 200 hours for $9.99/mo. There’s also a similar deal for screen sharing. If 2 screens aren’t enough, then you can opt for the Unlimited Screens add-on, priced at $9.99/mo.

Hulu network add-ons

Outside of premium channels, Hulu also offers a few channel bundles (get a full list here). With Hulu’s Entertainment add-on ($7.99/mo.), you’ll get extra individual channels. These are widely recognized national networks like American Heroes Channel, CNBC World, Cooking Channel, Destination America, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, DIY, FYI, Lifetime Movies, and Science Channel.

Hulu also has a useful add-on for Spanish language speakers. For an extra $4.99/mo. you can get the Español add-on. With it, you’ll receive CNN en Español, Discovery en Español, Discovery Familia, ESPN Deportes, History Channel en Español, and NBC Universo, not to mention live streams and on-demand content.

The final cut

There are more than a few Hulu add-ons to upgrade your subscription. Whether you’re in search of Hulu premium channels like HBO Max or want a bundle of 10 national entertainment networks, there’s an add-on solution for you. And you can even improve your cloud DVR storage or opt for unlimited screens, all for an additional monthly price. Just keep in mind that some add-on features are only available with Hulu’s Live TV packages

Free trials and deals are available for anyone who’s interested in trying Hulu out. Enjoy Hulu’s on-demand subscriptions for an entire 30 days with its impressive trial period. Or, consider giving Hulu + Live TV a spin for seven days
