This week Locast launched in Washington DC and Baltimore. Now Locast is asking for donations to help pick the next city they will launch in. You can visit https://www.locast.org/donate-next-city/ and for each dollar you donate toward a $250,000 goal Locast will add one vote to your home town.

Los Angeles is leading with $650 followed by Portland at $200 and Las Vegas at $150. There are other cities currently in the running like Seattle and Miami.

Locast said during a call with the press this week that it costs $100,000 to $250,000 to launch in each new market. The cost depends on a lot of variables including finding a location to place the antenna and streaming equipment.

Locast also recently announced the launch of a new Roku, Android, Chromecast, and iOS app making it easier to stream your locals. Locast parent company Sports Fans Coalition is a nonprofit that says they have an exception in the FCC rules allowing them to air locals without paying for the service. They are hoping to be protected by Title 17, Chapter 1, section 111 a) 5 of the Copyright Act, a section that allows nonprofits to avoid many of the fees companies would typically pay.

Sports Fans Coalition was created for the purpose of launching Locast and is headed by David Goodfriend. The question now is how will broadcasters react to this new service? One advantage for Sports Fans Coalition is the fact that Goodfriend is no stranger to pushing back against broadcasters and the NFL.
