On Thursday, NBC announced that it will launch NBC News Studios, a studio that will create projects for new platforms.
Noah Oppenheim, president of NBC News, and Liz Cole, president of NBC News Studios made the announcement. The two shared that the studio will create documentaries, docuseries, scripted content, and more for emerging platforms.
Those emerging platforms include Focus Features, Blumhouse Television, Peacock, and Quibi.
“We will pitch a lot of places, and maybe we will even have a documentary you can see in the theater at some point,” said Cole, according to an exclusive report for Variety.
Cole went on to say that NBC News Studios has the resources to help newer platforms create “distinctive” programming. Those resources include the network’s news archive, staff support, research teams, and investigative unit.
Current plans for the studio include a partnership with Focus Features to produce documentaries about influential people and events. With Blumhouse, the studio will work on scripted programming based on Dateline stories, according to the Variety report.
Two upcoming streaming services, Peacock and Quibi, will also be partnering with NBC News Studios. Peacock will be getting a documentary series about “one of America’s most notorious serial killers” and the studio will create daily news programs for Quibi.
