Netflix announced its newest project underway will also be its most expensive. The Gray Man is an action thriller starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans directed by the Russo Brothers and is reported to have a budget upwards of $200 million. The film is said to be a possible franchise on a James Bond-level with Gosling expected to return to his starring role in sequels.

“The movie is a real mano a mano between those two great actors who represent two different versions of the CIA, in what it can be, and what it can do,” Anthony Russo told Deadline. “For those who were fans of Captain America: Winter Soldier, this is us moving into that territory in more of a real-world setting. That’s what this movie really means for us.”

It’s interesting that the Russo Brothers chose to release a film of this scale on a streaming service vs at the box office, but the producers have their reasons.

“The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical, and the ability to do with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us,” Joe Russo said. “The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it. We have all committed to the first movie, and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie.”

“We formed AGBO to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we figure out the best platform,” Russo said. “We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.”

Netflix is just coming off the high from Extraction, its Chris Hemsworth original and most successful film to date. The movie was also produced by the Russo brothers’ AGBO company and accumulated 99 million views in its first four weeks alone. The streamer has already greenlit a sequel but exact details aren’t confirmed yet, and neither is whether Hemsworth will return to his role of Tyler Rake. But back in May, Russo said he’s optimistic in the return of the lead role as well as director Sam Hargrave coming back as well. The film is currently in production with no release date yet.
