Netflix is developing three interactive specials based on Carmen Sandiego, Boss Baby, and Last Kids on Earth, a source told Bloomberg.
According to the source, these will be movies or specials, not full series. The three specials will add to the list of at least a dozen interactive series on the streaming service, making it clear that this unique approach to streaming content is one that Netflix is increasingly interested in.
The specials will reportedly be a hybrid of traditional series that are viewed as normal and video games where the viewer is in control of the characters. This interactive content will allow viewers to make choices to determine how the story will progress.
The first of these choose your adventure type programs was Puss in Book which was introduced in 2017. Kids were a natural audience to try this type of content, with Puss in Book based on a popular Shrek character, because they’ve grown up interacting with screen through voice commands and swiping.
Netflix tried out interactive content again with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, then again with You Vs. Wild. Netflix said that over 90% of Bandersnatch viewers interacted in some way during the episode.
These three interactive specials re reported to be the next in this line of content, but sources say Netflix is also working on an interactive episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
