This is Why Netflix Does Not Want to Be in Apple’s New Universal TV App

APPLE-TELEVISIONThis week Apple announced a new universal TV app that brings all of your video content into one place for easy access; however, one major streaming service was missing…Netflix.

Now it sounds as though Netflix is the reason they are not in Apple’s new TV app. As for why Netflix does not want their content in Apple’s new TV app, it is fairly straightforward.

Netflix has been working for years now spending a lot of money to keep you in the Netflix app and to have you watch more Netflix. Now that Netflix is a publicly traded company and numbers such as hours viewed—right next to number of subscribers—are important for keeping a high stock price.

From our understanding Netflix seems to fear that having their content indistinguishable from others such as Hulu will mean less hours on Netflix. When everything is right next to each other you may be less likely to stay inside the Netflix ecosystem.

But why Netflix is worried is why smaller services such as Hulu are excited to join. They hope that you will jump from watching “Stranger Things” on Netflix to “The Mindy Project” or “The Simpsons” on Hulu before you even realize you left Netflix.

It will be interesting to see if Netflix will change their mind later. Or if their bet on people making a special trip to Netflix will pay off.
