No Over-the-Air Free TV is Not Going Away & Other Lies Cable Companies Tell You

There has been a lot of confusion and flat-out lies about over-the-air TV recently. With the announcement of the new 4K over-the-air TV standard approved by the FCC has come confusion; however, have no fear you will still be able to get the same free over-the-air TV you get now.

So who has been spreading these claims that over-the-air TV will go away? You guessed it, cable TV…

Recently we have heard reports of this being told to people who are canceling cable TV when they call to cancel. Now we find a Reddit post with the same story.

So what is happening here?

Probably someone who gets paid for every person they talk out of canceling found a good way to talk people out of cord cutting. It could even turn out to not be a Spectrum employee but a phone center they hired.

The truth is many of these reps you talk to on the phone at cable companies do not work for the cable companies. Often they farm this work out to contractors and pay the agents for every new sign up and every customer they keep from downgrading or leaving.

What a system like that does is create a reward for the agent to say anything in order to get you to sign up for a new package. Sadly some reps seem to put making a dollar ahead of telling the truth.

Other common tricks I hear are promising that you can cancel at any time when you are really locked into a contract. Or telling people they get free HBO but forgetting to mention it is only good for 3 months and they will be billed after that.

So make sure to take everything they say with a grain of salt and do your own research. Remember they get paid when you sign up, so be suspicious.

We did reach out to Charter for comment and will update this story if they reply.
