We had been contacted by several customers of RedBox Instant saying they have been notified from RedBox Instant that the services will shut down October 7th. Now Redbox Instant posted the following on their Facebook page:

To Our Customers-

Thank you for being a part of Redbox Instant by Verizon. Please be aware that the service will be shut down on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Information on applicable refunds will be emailed to current customers and posted here www.redboxinstant.com/news on October 10. In the meantime, you may continue to stream movies and use your Redbox kiosk credits until Tuesday, October 7 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

We apologize for any inconvenience and we thank you for the opportunity to entertain you.

Sincerely,
The Redbox Instant by Verizon Team

In their FAQ about the shut down RedBox instant stated “The service is shutting down because it was not as successful as we hoped it would be. We apologize for any inconvenience and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to entertain you.”.

  • If you purchased any digital content from them they are looking for a way to still offer it to you. “We’re exploring options for customers who purchased electronic versions of on-demand movies. You’ll receive an email from us shortly, or you can check back here for an update in about two weeks. We appreciate your patience.”
  • It also appears you can still use your RedBox credits until October 7th at 11:59pm PST. Make sure to use them all up before the end or you will lose them.
  • RedBox will be giving a refund to all of their current customers. “We will be providing a full month’s subscription fee refund to customers who paid for, but only received a partial month of service. For example, if you paid the monthly subscription fee after September 8, 2014, you will automatically receive a full one month subscription fee refund to your payment card.” Refunds should be posted to customers card on file on October 24th 2014.
  • If you have rented a movie but have yet to watch it when the service closes you will be refunded for the rental as long as it is with in the 30 day watch period.

This is a worse case scenario for anyone who has purchased a movie digitally online. Hopefully RedBox and Verizon find a quick solution for people who own movies through their service.

We have reached out to RedBox Instant but have yet to hear anything back. We will update this story once we know more.
