Streaming has grown by leaps and bounds in the past few years, and more viewers are opting to watch big events like the Olympics via streaming instead of traditional cable TV. New data from Conviva shows that the day of the 2022 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony recorded a349% increase in viewing time as compared to the same event in 2018, highlighting the massive gains in streaming over the past four years.
Most viewers tuned into hours 2 and 3 of the four-hour event, with Connected TVs and tablets – specifically Apple iPads – as the most popular devices for viewing.
Combined big screens, which includes smart TVs, connected TV devices, and gaming consoles, accounted for nearly half of the opening ceremony viewing time.
Roku and Amazon Fire TV were by far the favorite big screens, with Roku TVs and devices accounting for 38% of big screen viewership. Amazon Fire TV took the second spot with 23% of viewing time. Apple TV, Samsung TV, and Linux STB represented the middle of the pack with 10%, 8%, and 8%, respectively.
