Man on couch watching TVYesterday Apptopia released a look at some of the most popular live TV streaming services for cord cutters. One service that was missing from that list was PlayStation Vue. So Cord Cutters News reached out to Apptopia to ask why PlayStation Vue was not included in the list of services.

According to Apptopia, PlayStation Vue only had 193,000 downloads on mobile platforms like iOS and Android in the 3rd quarter of 2019. That may sound like a large number but compared to Hulu’s 7.2 million and YouTube TV’s 2.1 million it was so small Apptopia didn’t include it in charts.

This works out to just over 2,097 downloads per day for PlayStation Vue, compared to over 78,260 downloads for Hulu and over 22,826 daily downloads for YouTube TV in the 3rd quarter of 2019. This would put PlayStation Vue behind Hulu, YouTube TV, Sling TV, fuboTV, and Philo when looking at downloads for live TV streaming services on iOS and Android.

This study does lineup well with Roku’s list of most popular live TV streaming services that puts Playstation Vue in 6th place. According to Roku, here are the most popular live TV streaming services:

  1. Hulu
  2. Sling TV
  3. YouTube TV
  4. AT&T TV (Including AT&T TV NOW)
  5. Philo
  6. PlayStation Vue
  7. fuboTV

This drop off in new downloads may be tied to Sony’s recent pullback in promotions of PlayStation Vue. Last year at this time we saw widespread advertising for PlayStation Vue including TV ads. Now Sony has canceled almost all advertising for the live TV streaming service. For now, we will have to see what Sony does next with PlayStation Vue as it seems services like Hulu and YouTube TV are speeding ahead, at least when looking at the number of app downloads in the 3rd quarter of 2019.
