PlayStation Vue Emails More Subscribers About a Price Hike

A young woman is sitting in her kitchen and is loking at her receipts at home while using a smart phoneLast week we reported that PlayStation Vue had emailed some subscribers to notify them that their Slim pricing would be discontinued. Now over the weekend, it looks like most PlayStation Vue subscribers have received the email notifying them that their Slim pricing is coming to an end.

A few months ago Sony announced that it is removing its less expensive Slim plans, which started at $29.99. These plans rolled out when PlayStation Vue went nationwide for markets without or with only a few locals. At first, it was reported to be happening in October but now Sony is saying the price hike will happen in November.

Here is the email PlayStation Vue is sending out:This price hike will affect subscribers who had the less expensive Slim plans would see the price hike. This means for many PlayStation Vue subscribers the next time your plan comes up for renewal in November you will pay an extra $10 a month. (The exact date it will happen depends on when your account is set to renew.)

Recently Sony has been rushing out more locals to many PlayStation Vue subscribers. Sony has yet to come out and bluntly say why it raised its price, but it has hinted that it was related to its push for more locals and content.

Now if you are in one of the original markets that already paid an extra $10 a month and started at $39.99 you won’t see a price hike. This only affected people in the old Slim plans.

So if you don’t want to pay the higher price, you need to cancel before your renewal in November 2017.

Lol come on over to DTV Now no price hikes yet and we still have Viacom

    • Daniel November 20, 2017 at 3:43 pm #

or to Philo so you don’t have to give up the DVR.

    • Carl Collie November 20, 2017 at 4:26 pm #

Also don’t have a DVR after a year. And I could care less about Viacom.

    • Dean G November 20, 2017 at 5:09 pm #

LOL, no price hikes and no decent stream either…. Just canceled the service got tired of watching the blue square of death. It bottoms out more than microsoft.

      • Daniel November 20, 2017 at 6:05 pm #

especially on lower end hardware, first gen Fire Sticks can’t even hold a stream at all. constant Blue Rectangles

        • Jimmy757 November 20, 2017 at 7:08 pm #

no one still has 1st gen firesticks thats your problem right there

          • Daniel November 20, 2017 at 8:03 pm #

it’s not even 2 years old, it’s not like i’m running a Roku from 2011 and complaining it runs bad, also outside of being SLOW as molasses to navigate menus it handled Vue and Sling without playback issues and is still used for Netflix, this one is on DTVNow for not being an efficient enough stream to not constantly buffer on the Fire Stick

          • Jimmy757 November 20, 2017 at 11:40 pm #

netflix is not a live tv streaming service big difference. you only need 5 down to stream netflix. you can’t have 5 down with 5 down. with that being said you cant compare the two

          • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 3:49 am #

Netflix was just 1 scenario, it also NEVER buffers when playing Sling, or Playstation Vue (both of which are Live TV services, so give up the “live tv is different then netflix” argument, the FACT is this 1 service buffers and NO OTHER LIVE SERVICES BUFFER, but yeah thanks for skipping right over that part of my previous statement to jump all over me about how Netflix can’t be compared to live TV like everyone on the Vue forums.

          • Jimmy757 November 21, 2017 at 11:48 am #

You get buffering issues I don’t luke says he doesn’t either. You need to upgrade whether that be modem router wifi extender up your speed dtv is the best lol hands down…

          • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 12:25 pm #

AGAIN YOU AREN’T LISTENING TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apple TV, plays fine, Fire TV plays LIVE TV fine, ALL OF THESE DEVICES PLAY EVERY OTHER LIVE TV SERVICE FINE, I have well over 20 HOURS OF STREAMING PHILO in the last few days (mostly on my PC) with ZERO BUFFERING, my INTERNET IS 10 TIMES FASTER then the speed 1 stream of DTVNow ACTUALLY RUNS AT, I have a 200 dollar HIGH END ROUTER, IT IS NOT MY HARDWARE, it is DTV NOW, MANY MANY PEOPLE, even people with GIGABIT CONNECTIONS are reporting the SAME ISSUES I AM HAVING, just because YOU might not see the issues doesn’t mean it’s magically a hardware issue on the other end. also did you completely SKIP OVER the part where I definitively PROVED it to be IMPOSSIBLE TO BE A NETWORK OR HARDWARE ISSUE, GO TROLL ELSEWHERE, I’VE BEEN STREAMING LIVE TV FOR 2 YEARS AND SEE MORE PLAYBACK ISSUES IN A WEEK WITH DTV NOW THEN I’VE SEEN WITH EVERY OTHER SERVICE FOR THE YEAR I HAD THEM BEFORE SWITCH TO DTV NOW.

      • Jimmy757 November 20, 2017 at 7:08 pm #

i don’t get the blue box maybe you should upgrade your internet connection

        • Daniel November 20, 2017 at 8:10 pm #

blue box has NOTHING to do with your internet, FYI.
I can stream DTVNow on my Laptop (high end gaming laptop with a 4 core 8 thread i7 an SSD boot drive and 32GB of RAM) and get occasional fits of buffering, then STOP that stream, stream on my cell phone connected to the same wifi network with the cell phone sitting to the right of my trackpad on the laptop and not buffer once for an hour, then switch back and buffering returns, DTVNow is clearly allocating a set amount of bandwidth to each type of device and they aren’t giving enough to certain device types (I can also stream through an Apple TV with ZERO blue boxing and my internet is 10 times the bitrate of what a DTVNow stream runs at.

  2. Cinnie Maer Crockett November 20, 2017 at 4:22 pm #

I live in the Denver area. The Elite Slim plan ($44.99) was charged to my account on 11/16. As of today (11/20), my subscription summary still shows my next charge will be $44.99 on 12/16 for the Elite Slim package. Keeping fingers crossed. I have all locals except NBC, CW, & My TV.

    • Daniel November 20, 2017 at 5:39 pm #

then you have a good chance at being fine, I thin these increases are coming as they bring locals online, once you hit a certain number of locals you get the price hike the next month, this is how they did it before they dropped the slim plans entirely.

      • Carl Collie November 20, 2017 at 11:32 pm #

Nope, my plan just renewed yesterday, and today my new price is $44.99 due at the December renewal. I only get one network, and it is the worst one for me, ABC. Still cheaper than any alternative out there that offers what I need, plus a DVR.

        • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 4:03 am #

maybe you have more coming online this month? Is Youtube TV in your area? Youtube TV and Philo would only be like 6 bucks more a month then your current new December price and you would get a TON more channels then what your Core plan has on it, including Velocity which would be cheaper then upgrading to the Elite plan from Vue.

          • Carl Collie November 21, 2017 at 7:14 am #

No Regional sports on YouTube or Hulu, so my only choice is DTV, Vue and Sling. Must have a DVR. So the other options are more expensive or don’t meet our needs. I will stick with VUE, it works perfectly, the DVR is simple and intuitive, and it has 95% of the channels we need.

  3. Deon Hamner November 20, 2017 at 4:46 pm #

    I don’t see them lasting past 5 years…

  4. S. Mays November 20, 2017 at 4:52 pm #

Not a good time, PS Vue. Just installed Philo and I’m very impressed so far. While I like Vue, the fact they’ve lost so many channels while keeping the price the same, and now plan on raising rates 33% has me looking for other services.

    • Daniel November 20, 2017 at 5:41 pm #

yeah, Philo is CRUSHING IT, most reliable streams yet, like Netflix level reliable and a fraction the price, just needs a guide and more device support

      • Gilgamesh November 20, 2017 at 11:39 pm #

And more channels. No live sports, no FX, no USA. No dice.

        • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 3:54 am #

the WHOLE PURPOSE of Philo was to cut the cost by NOT having all the over priced sports networks, the side effect is any network owned by companies that do live sports on other channels is lost because those companies try to FORCE all those EXPENSIVE sports channels on the service to get ANY of there channels, this is why cable is SO EXPENSIVE, if you need sports go get a sports specific service, Philo combined with Hulu Live, Fubo TV or Youtube TV covers basically every channel out there and comes out cheaper then Vues Elite package that you would need to get Velocity which is on Philo.

          • Gilgamesh November 21, 2017 at 8:21 am #

            Oh where to begin…

What the bleep is velocity and why would I almost double my cost to get that one channel? The core package contains everything I listed and more for $40. I’m in an original locals market so my price isn’t changing.

You didn’t address any of the other channels I listed, not to mention the fact I didn’t even list all the ones Philo is missing for me.

Live sports isn’t what makes cable expensive. Proven by the fact I dropped cable, saved $60 a month, and still have my live sports. Cable is expensive from a combination of the 500 channels they also cream into the base package that no one we watches and the price gouging they have done for decades because they had no competition. And there is no sports specific service that is going to get me bears, bulls and Cubs games.

If Philo has everything you need, that’s great. But it isn’t crushing anything because it doesn’t have what most people want. Which is more than just one of the things I mentioned in the first post, despite the fact it’s the only one you responded to.

          • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 12:46 pm #

you said and I quote “live sports” how am I or anyone else supposed to know exactly which networks you need for your “live sports”, are you into soccer, football, baseball, college sports, if you say you need sports then say exactly what CHANNELS you need, and sports are certainly expensive, take ESPN, that 1 channel is REQUIRED to get any other Disney or ABC content and that 1 channel is in the 7-8 dollar a month cost range, it is hands down with NO COMPETITION the single most expensive network to carry, several other sports networks fill most of the top 10 most expensive channel lineup, but they drop closer to the 1-3 dollars a channel, for comparison popular cable channels are around 20-50 cents a piece when part of a bundle of channels.

just because YOU want sports doesn’t mean there isn’t a LARGE number of people tired of paying that 8 bucks a month of there bill to Disney for the ESPN they never watch and to top it off Philo is insanely reliable, it hasn’t screwed up once, it just flat works even on day 1, the same could not be said of the other live tv streaming services I have used. so in terms of reliability and price to what you get they are very much crushing it, just because it doesn’t have all your channels doesn’t make it bad.

          • Gilgamesh November 21, 2017 at 5:06 pm #

I honestly had to go look at your message history to see if you were a paid marketing person for Philo…

Lets see, I said “If Philo has everything you need, that’s great.”
Your response? To accuse me of calling it bad.

I named multiple channels I want that it doesnt have.
Your response? To berate me for not listing channels I want, and completely ignoring that deficiency.

            I listed Live Sports.
Your response? To pretend to assume that means the most obscure sports on the most obscure and expensive channels that only exist in the top packages and not … you know … the most popular live sports or anything.

And add to that some weird repeated rant about reliability as if anyone has any reliability issues with any of the major products.

Crushing it? Yea you should be using that to describe Sling. They’re the ones getting tons of customers, That’s what crushing it is. it should be Vue but it isn’t for some weird reason. Just because YOU don’t care about live sports doesn’t mean there isn’t a LARGE number of people who do. As evidenced by the fact that most cord cutters switch to another service that gives them LIVE SPORTS. Everyone doesn’t have to want what you want,

          • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 6:36 pm #

and why is it if someone likes a service they must be getting paid to promote it? can’t people like something without being paid off?

          • Gilgamesh November 21, 2017 at 7:22 pm #

Of course people can like something without being paid. But when they lose their mind when someone else lists reasons why that thing isn’t right for them then you start to look for ulterior motives. Why else would it matter so much?

I still have no idea what velocity is, but I’m going to go ahead and guess they don’t have NFL, NBA or MLB games (which I did list for you). So yes, obscure channels.

Glad you finally acknowledged that I listed FX and USA. Now if only you can acknowledge Philo doesn’t have them and that I’d have to pay for a second service with them and a DVR, making it a poor financial choice even without the sporting barrier.

I listed what sports teams I want to watch. What’s the purpose of actually listing the networks they are on too? Like, what’s the end game here? Are we going to find out Philo has them or something? We already know it doesn’t. So again, I’d be buying a second service making it the wrong choice for me.

          • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 7:46 pm #

you DID NOT list what sports nor what sports teams, you just said LIVE SPORTS and again i need NETWORKS, not types of sports, or teams, teams aren’t exclusive to certain networks. But whatever I give up.

          • Gilgamesh November 21, 2017 at 10:05 pm #

I guess when I said Bears, Bulls and Cubs games I could have been talking about the zoo…

And of course you’re giving up, I keep telling you that you have no case. Why you are so determined to make one is beyond me. Do you think your going to tell me to use an antenna? Nope, not where I live. Won’t work. Do you think you’re going to find another service to pair with Philo for less than what I pay? Nope, doesn’t exist. It’s almost as if I’ve looked into what works best for me or something…

  5. Vegas Steve November 20, 2017 at 4:53 pm #

Sony is such a clueless company. Your rate is going up… nope, whoops, it’s not… oh, yes it is… Duh, make up your mind, have a strategy and stick with it.

  6. Chris Zook November 20, 2017 at 6:18 pm #

I didn’t receive the latest email, but since my previous billing on 11/3, my account had been showing $34.99 for the Core Slim price, to be charged on my next billing on 12/3. As of today, it’s showing the $44.99 price for Core. I’m not complaining because I’ve had all four major locals since early September, and I have been expecting my price to go up as soon they did get added since I first signed up for Vue in June 2016. In that time, they’ve dropped channels I didn’t care about any way and added three high priority channels for me. None of the other OTT live TV service come close to giving me what I need for the price.

  7. Duelingdragon November 20, 2017 at 6:40 pm #

Im in Orlando and got the price hike to $44.99 for Core Slim this week. Have had locals for a while. Still the best deal for me based on channels I watch and quality. I’ll hang with them until something else major happens.

  8. Jimmy757 November 20, 2017 at 7:10 pm #

vue wont last to much longer with the competion

    • Gilgamesh November 20, 2017 at 11:35 pm #

I’m still waiting for the competition to have the channels I watch and a DVR for the same or lower price. Hasn’t happened yet, so to me there is no competition.

      • Jimmy757 November 20, 2017 at 11:41 pm #

i hear ya buddy hey guess your right it is just 5 bucks lol

    • Carl Collie November 21, 2017 at 7:12 am #

Are you serious? It fits a niche in the market that no other service has, locals, DVR, regional sports and Discovery. Does it have everything, nope, it is not for everyone. If you must have MTV it is not for you, if you want cheap and just a few channels its not for you. You live in the 90s and only watch live tv, its not for you. That is what’s great about this new era, there are choices that hopefully meet everyone’s needs, and guess what? They are all within a few bucks of each other. VUE hits about 95% of mine, I gave up the History/A&E and gained a DVR, Discovery, and Region Sports. I had to make a choice, plus at the time it was cheaper by a wide margin, now it is down to $5 cheaper, but hey they don’t stand a chance.

      • Jimmy757 November 21, 2017 at 11:44 am #

You hear luke saying pr sucks no line of communication I still stick to I don’t see them lasting over 2 years my opinion

  9. Fred Koot November 21, 2017 at 6:09 am #

First off there is not a price hike. They are just eliminating the Slim packages, which was always the plan. Still the best service out there if you count selection and features.

    • Carl Collie November 21, 2017 at 7:08 am #

I agree, however the removal of Slim was meant to occur when your region got 3 of the 4 networks. I am now paying $10 and I get a grand total of 1. IF they would give me what they promised, I would have no problem with the new rates. I have looked at all the options, and since I have to have my regional sports for local Hockey, it is still the best deal. It is $5 less than DTVNow and and Sling plus I get the Discovery Channel and a DVR. Hulu and YouTube are a no go as they do not have regional sports. So until something changes I will pay $45 still a lot cheaper than Spectrum and n par with every other service.

    • Kevin S November 21, 2017 at 10:43 am #

Same boat as Carl, slim plan eliminated, still the same one local I got when I signed up. For now cancelled and going DTV now.

And now that I see YouTube TV is sending most of the sports channels at 60fps, may go back to them.

It’s nice to have choices and no contracts.

      • Fred Koot November 21, 2017 at 11:15 am #

I tried to quit Vue, but none of the other services work for me. I do get all locals with Vue and it bothers me to pay $10 for something I can get for free. Now and You tube both have the same base as Vue since Vue for me doesn’t charge tax.

    • bellsfolly November 21, 2017 at 7:41 pm #

It may not be a price hike, per se….but it really feels that way to me. Since I basically have a ‘slim’ package…here in OKC, just one local, CBS, not that I really care about that since I get all of the locals OTA anyway. But still, seeing a $10 increase simply because they’re eliminating the Slim packages, but without giving some of us really much of anything to compensate leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth.

Still, after all is said and done–and ranted…am basically happy with Vue overall. I like the way it works, easy to add shows to be DVR’d. And the inclusion of Discovery is a must for me and the family.

  10. Kevin S November 21, 2017 at 7:21 am #

And I just cancelled since I still have the same 1 local I did when I signed up for a slim plan.

  11. Ken Harrell November 21, 2017 at 7:47 am #

$10 more and still only one local in the Charleston, SC market, Raycomm CBS affiliate. We also have a Sinclair ABC and Nexstar NBC channels. Raised the price and nothing new. Grrrr!

  12. stumpy579 November 21, 2017 at 7:49 am #

I have not received the email. My subscription renewed yesterday at the same price ($34.99 for core slim). I’m still at the same price for at least another month. I get one local(CBS). Even if it goes up $10 it is still far and away the best service for me so I will keep it.

  13. DannyMac November 21, 2017 at 8:30 am #

Sounds like its time for IPTVcutternews.com to be a thing. 😉

  14. BW Williams November 21, 2017 at 9:29 am #

Yes, received my email from PSVue on 11/20 with notification of the $10 price hike – up to $39/ month. 33% increase with no explanation or reason for the price hike. Just raising the rate , so live with it….
AMC is the only station keeping me with PSVue – anyone know of a better option ?

    • bellsfolly November 21, 2017 at 7:33 pm #

If you don’t really care about sports or news, this new Philo channel looks really good, especially at $16/month. Includes AMC, as well as Discovery, History, A&E, Travel Channel, Food Network, and many more. Once I upgrade from my old Roku 2, I’m going to seriously look at philo to replace PSVue.

      • BW Williams November 21, 2017 at 9:48 pm #

Thanks for the tip , I will check out Philo

  15. Michael K Pate November 21, 2017 at 10:33 am #

I am coming up on my first anniversary on PS Vue.$29.95 all year. They have added both CBS and ABC over the last few months so they now offer everything but NBC. I can’t really object to the price hike.

But the NASCAR season ended Sunday. So I don’t need NBSCN and FS1 until February. Most of the broadcast shows I watch are on the CW so I just watch those through the app. I just to watch a lot of Fox News but I can take it or leave it these days.

So I am going to cancel for now and restart in February. Or sooner if I get desperate to watch the NFL and the Bowl Games but I didn’t watch a lot last year and I think I can handle missing them again. And I can always catch up on Fixer Upper.

This will give me a chance to get caught up on Netflix. And maybe explore Amazon Prime a little more. And maybe even try out Hulu.

If I go the whole 3 months, this is $120 saved.

  16. Robert Simandl November 21, 2017 at 11:15 am #

An extra $10 a month for locals I couldn’t care less about (I get 49 channels with my antenna, so take THAT, Vue with your TWO locals). Waiting for Hulu live to reach 60fps, then will probably jump since I already have their on demand stuff.

  17. bellsfolly November 21, 2017 at 6:35 pm #

I haven’t received any email from PSVue as of today, but just now went to the website, and it is now saying that my next bill on December 14th will be $39.99, up from 29.99. As of 2 days ago, it was still saying that my next bill was still going to be at the same rate.
But, I was ‘gifted’ the upgrade from Access Slim to the Elite package here while back when they were doing that. And that is effective until January 28th. Of all of those extra channels, really the only one I care about is TCM–which will be nice to have during the holidays for some classic movies.
But after January, I may be shopping around. Will see.

On another note, my old Roku 2 (2720X) updated from OS 7.7 to the 8.0 last night. Seems to be working ok. I’m still on the old PSVue interface…and from what I’ve read, I kinda hope it doesn’t update itself. I don’t care enough about having some grid to have to re-learn how to find my shows, etc.

    • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 6:41 pm #

it’s not at all hard to find your shows on the new interface (if you do get it), there is literally a MY SHOWS tab like 2-3 clicks from where the main menu loads to, right beside the button for the Guide at the top of the screen which is far better then the old Roku interface, the real issue is how glitchy the new app, I had to exit to the Roku Home Screen like 3 times and reload the Vue app because it stopped responding to button presses on the remote.

      • bellsfolly November 21, 2017 at 7:15 pm #

Did your Vue app update itself, or did you have to delete it and re-install? Just watched a video on youtube that a guy named Daniel (is that you?) posted which did a good job of showing how to navigate, save shows, etc. But yeah, he/you 😉 was also not happy with the glitchiness of the new app. Has it gotten any better since day one?

        • Daniel November 21, 2017 at 7:51 pm #

my youtube channel is danilerichards644 I just uploaded the video last night, I think there might be another Daniel with Vue related videos, I had a bunch of issues with the app not responding to button presses in my video and it was a like 9-10 minutes long. I had just downloaded the app fresh after I heard about it coming out then got on a trial so I can’t speak to the update process other then to say generally speaking with Roku you do 1 system update to get the actual OS to update then once it does you need to go back in and run a second check for updates to get it to actually update the apps that have 8.0 required updates. Not all Roku’s are currently getting the 2.0 Vue update (my video is titled something like PSVue 2.0 Roku update)

          • bellsfolly November 21, 2017 at 7:59 pm #

Yes, yours is the one I just watched a few minutes ago. Very helpful, so thanks! I do like the idea that once you add a network to your favorites, it apparently puts those at the top of your Guide–that’s very handy.
Yeah, once the Roku updated to 8.0, I actually have done several manual system updates, but nothing else has changed thus far.
Working up the nerve to delete the Vue app, and then re-install, which I’m fairly certain will force a 2.0 update.

  18. LeftAlphaBeast December 10, 2017 at 8:14 pm #

They added just 11 metro locals, yet everyone got hikes, Seems like a raw deal of everyone paying for the urban users. but that’s Sony for you. I dropped my vue.
