PlayStation Vue is Giving Away FREE Upgrades to Their Elite Package For Thanksgiving

Just in time for Thanksgiving, PlayStation Vue is giving away free upgrades to its Elite package but don’t expect an email telling you that you got the upgrade. Several readers yesterday told Cord Cutters News that they just suddenly saw a ton of additional channels in their PlayStation Vue app.

This upgrade will give lucky PlayStation Vue subscribers access to the $64.99 a month Elite plan that includes 90-plus HD channels. After the free upgrade ends, subscribers will automatically be returned to the plan they had before the free upgrade.

Update: Sony posted on the PlayStation Vue website that this free upgrade ends November 25th 2017.

Sony still has not commented on how it is picking which PlayStation Vue subscribers will get the upgrade. For now the selection seems to be almost at random because we first suspected that former Slim subscribers got the upgrade in exchange for the upcoming price hike; however, other readers say they already pay the higher price and still got the free upgrade.

For now it seems that Sony is hoping you will upgrade to a more expensive PlayStation Vue plan after the free period ends. We do not know how long this upgrade will be good for so enjoy it as long as you have it.

Is there something we have to do to get it or is it automatic? I currently have the slim package.

Actually it’s the$74.99 ultra plan which includes HBO and Showtime. Just received today going from the $39 access. Never received an upgrade in the past 1 1/2 years

Same here, when I checked earlier I did not have HBO or Showtime, but now I do, now that is a much better upgrade.

  3. Carl Collie November 22, 2017 at 11:34 am #

I got the upgrade, again makes the pain of paying $10 more a little less. I can now watch Velocity and Nat Geo Wild and the wife gains more Hallmark for the holidays. Other than a few more movie channels to me it is not worth the upgrade, but for free, not going to complain. But somebody will in 3, 2, …

I log into my account. It is the Ultra package, but it expires on January 28th, 2018

      • Carl Collie November 22, 2017 at 12:04 pm #

Where do you see that, when I log in it still has my normal plan with my next renewal date of December 19th?

        • Teddy G November 22, 2017 at 12:12 pm #

          check in “Modify Subscription”
It says Elite but I do have HBO and Showtime

          • bellsfolly November 22, 2017 at 6:23 pm #

Exact same on mine, January 28th.

          • Dean G November 23, 2017 at 9:01 am #

That is the old upgrade that select people got prior. The free upgrade to the Ultra is not showing under your manage subscription area. Getting HBO and Showtime is the Ultra package.

          • Teddy G November 23, 2017 at 10:27 am #

I don’t know. The pic above was a screen capture from my monitor. As you can see I have the slim. that’s the service I am actually paying. the Elite above was added yesterday and I do have the two HBOs and Showtime. I have no idea other than what I see, shrug. But I’m not complaining 🙂

          • Dean G November 23, 2017 at 10:42 am #

The HBO and Showtime is only until the 25th as it has been stated. It is a free giveaway by VUE. The Elite upgrade was given to only some people months ago, you’re not paying for it, it is a free upgrade. I know, I have it. Are you sure you just got the Elite yesterday? I’ve had it for months already as did others. That “slim” package is no more it doesn’t matter you still see it on your manage subscription side as of now, mine just says Access but I signed up when I had all my locals available right away at the higher rate already. Go to the home page of Vue where you see packages available in your zip code, you will see what is now offered and what you will be changed to as well as you should have been emailed about it already. There are now only 4 packages available from Vue: Ultra, Elite, Core and Access. The Slim one is going to disappear….

It def is the highest pkg with HBO… also HBO on-demand works during this time to which is cool… but I think it ends on Friday. Should only last 1 week. Would be amazing if it was 6 months lol, but it isn’t

  4. Teddy G November 22, 2017 at 11:43 am #

Woo Hoo, I’ve been upgraded too. I have HBO East and West, and Showtime E & W. Nice….I wonder for how long this will last.

    • Carl Collie November 22, 2017 at 11:48 am #

HBO and Showtime are part of the Ultimate package not the Elite package, you must have got a different upgrade.

  5. Chris Hill November 22, 2017 at 11:48 am #

I got the upgrade 3 and a half months ago, don’t complain but say thank you to Vue. I’m loving a few of the channels and will probably upgrade to keep them when my trial is over in january. it’s a good move, by them, get me/us addicted to certain channes and we’ll upgrade when they are gone., I’m hooked already…

    • Carl Collie November 22, 2017 at 11:49 am #

Kind of like the crack dealers on the street.

  6. James Jarvis November 22, 2017 at 11:49 am #

Sweeet I got the upgrade but it still shows me at core, are we sure it last 6 months or is this a holidays only thing!

  7. Michael Smith November 22, 2017 at 12:05 pm #

I got the temporary upgrade too but now we are missing the We channel.

  8. Michael Smith November 22, 2017 at 12:09 pm #

Vue just added the We channel back in their line up.

  9. Brian Meyers Jr. November 22, 2017 at 12:09 pm #

After being a subscriber since the initial launch, I finally got a free update trial. Anyone know if there is a way to see how long we have this free upgrade for?

    • Brian Meyers Jr. November 22, 2017 at 12:10 pm #

Nevermind, just saw on Reddit that it is this:
NOTICE: From November 22nd through the 25th, PlayStation Vue subscribers with an Access, Core, or Elite package will be given a free preview of the Ultra package. Happy holidays!

I got the upgrade with HBO/Showtime. Interestingly, one day after my last billing period, having “Core Slim”, I noticed I was still being ‘grandfathered’ in at the old price ($34.99) for my next bill, 12/18. I look today, and that amount as changed to $44.99 (which I was expecting), but no e-mail. Maybe the upgrade is just a way to soften the blow of the increase.

    • bellsfolly November 22, 2017 at 6:20 pm #

Same here, just a couple of days ago it was showing my 12/14 bill would be at the grandfathered rate, then suddenly jumped $10. PSVue is just weird, customer-service-wise. I have never gotten one email telling me…anything. It just happens.
I like the app, and it has most of the channels my family likes–although I really wish they would add the A&E network channels (which would keep me from having to purchase Mountain Men and Curse of Oak Island from VUDU.) But once I upgrade my Roku 2, I will be seriously looking into the new Philo service.

  11. Cinnie Maer Crockett November 22, 2017 at 12:51 pm #

Thank you Luke for alerting us on this upgrade. I just looked at my channels. 2 HBOs & 2 Showtimes have been added. I currently have the elite slim plan. Yesterday, my page showed the December price would be $44.99. Today, it shows as Elite for $54.99. The channel additions must be to soften the blow of the price increase, so that you won’t cancel immediately & go to another service. I definitely will hang around longer than I would have before these additions.

    • Cinnie Maer Crockett November 22, 2017 at 1:38 pm #

PS: This may not be as good as I thought. I was viewing the web app when I made my comment. When I actually turned on PS Vue on my Apple TV, a popup stated this upgrade is for the Thanksgiving holiday only. Bummer. I will be shopping around again and comparing packages & channels with all services now. The positive is no contracts, so we can pick & choose.

    • Dean G November 23, 2017 at 9:08 am #

The Elite package has always been at $54.99, there is no such thing as a slim package anymore, it is gone and has been gone for quite some time. There are 4 packages, Access, Core, Elite and Ultra

      • Cinnie Maer Crockett November 23, 2017 at 11:05 am #

To clarify my situation, I have had PS Vue for almost a year. I was still being grandfathered at the Elite Slim $44.99 plan thru November 2017. Beginning with the December bill, this has been changed to the Elite plan at $54.99.

  12. Jim Carter November 22, 2017 at 3:16 pm #

Upon opening the Vue app, I was shown the promotion along with icons representing all included channels. Upon opening the guide the extra programming is part of my “all channels” lineup. Pretty straight forward.

  13. Gilgamesh November 22, 2017 at 4:08 pm #

Now the question is, what Showtime show can I binge over the weekend and be all the way through before the promo ends…?

  14. Michael Kaufman November 22, 2017 at 6:51 pm #

I too noticed the extra channels today. I also noticed that Playstation Vue will increase my rates on the next billing cycle. And I too didn’t get an email notifying me of that, but the increase shows up on my Playstation Vue’s subscription billing page for users next bill. We’ve had our one local channel on Playstation Vue added about 8 months ago, but none have been added since, so nothing new on the local side. We have an antenna too but if there is a price increase and everybody else is getting local channels added, it doesn’t quite justify the price increase for me. I might look into exploring the other choices available since I now won’t fear losing that 34.99 price since it will be gone now. I have no complaints about Playstation Vue though. It fit what we needed and I though they have a great service. But with the other services available, I will look into checking them out for a trial run and see if they fit us any better. Extra channels are nice, but the price of the service and channel choices available will mean more to me in the long run.

    • Carl Collie November 23, 2017 at 7:54 am #

Good luck, I already looked and found nothing any cheaper with the same functionality and channel availability. Until I see what DiretvNow does with the DVR if they ever release out of beta.

    • Dean G November 23, 2017 at 9:04 am #

I’m sorry but service should be first in the list, then price, then channels. Because it doesn’t matter if a company has the channels if their service is subpar you’ll be watching buffering not the channel.

  15. John Povall November 22, 2017 at 8:06 pm #

I will enjoy the free upgrade weekend. I have Core package usaully .

  16. JWH November 24, 2017 at 11:54 am #

I’ve narrowed down my options to PlayStation Vue vs. DirecTV Now using Apple TV (4 or 5), HDHomeRun Connect, Channels App for Apple TV and HD Antenna. Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

  17. Michael Kaufman November 27, 2017 at 9:15 am #

So far I’m still getting the upgrade from Playstation Vue and it’s November 27th at 8:15am as I’m watching Fast and Furious on HBO. I am a Core level subscriber and I was under the impression that the upgrade would disappear after November 25th. I was not one of the lucky ones who got the upgrade a few months ago as my extra channels showed up on November 22nd. I wonder how long this will last? A few hours..days??
