Playstation Vue LogoPlayStation Vue has always officially banned the use of VPNs. Now in the last week, Sony has stepped up its efforts to block them.

Over the last week, we’ve received a growing number of reports of Sony blocking VPNs from their services. Not all VPNs seem to be blocked, but Sony seems to be going after some of the most popular VPN services.

So, why the crackdown? VPNs are often used to get around blocks on accessing your content when you are out of the country or try to pretend you are in a different market to get access to different locals. This breaks PlayStation Vue’s Terms of Service, and if Sony wanted to they could terminate your account if they think you are using PlayStation Vue in markets you should not.

Sony is not the only streaming service to crack down on VPNs. Recently Netflix has stepped up its efforts to block VPNs. This is always a game of chess as a service will block VPNs and the VPNs will make changes to try and get around the blocks. Recently though some new AI-powered blocking systems have made using VPNs more difficult
