PlayStation Vue is Quietly Rolling Out À La Carte Channels

siliconvalley04__140421184546Ever wish you could subscribe to just one channel without a package? With PlayStation Vue you can now do just that.

À la carte channels have been the dream of cord cutters for a long time. Although the channels are limited in number, you can now buy HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, Machinima, Fox Soccer Plus, and Epix Hits/Showtime each without subscribing to a package. PlayStation Vue announced that HBO and Cinemax will be available as à la carte channels just last week and will join PlayStation Vue in October.

If you are a PlayStation Plus subscriber with their premium PlayStation membership, you can get a discount on these channels, which makes it the least expensive way to get Showtime at just $8.99 a month over the typical $10.99 a month.

Machinima is also $1 off at just $1.99 a month. FOX Soccer Plus is just $12.99 over the typical $14.99, and the Epix Hits/Showtime premium pack is just $11.49 a month rather than the typical $13.99.

PlayStation Vue still offers their typical packages ranging between $29.99 a month and $44.99 a month. These plans can be subscribed to with or without the à la carte channels.

Although this may not be the à la carte service many may want, it is a step in the right direction. Sony’s PlayStation Vue is the first cable-like provider to offer subscriptions to individual channels without the need to subscribe to a package.

Now if they would do the same for MLB/NBA/NHL Network it would be perfect!

Fox Soccer Plus is a good one for soccer fans but the rest of these you can already get without a provider. A La Carte means TBS, TNT, AMC, HGTV, USA, Nat Geo, Discovery, History… but in all honesty it may be too late for that anyway. My household now just buys season passes for the shows we want from those channels, we don’t need the live channel. And we still save a ton of money.

hey sony, stop collecting an extra $10 “re-transmission fee” for
our free OTA stations here in NYC, and maybe we’ll try vue out…

Unfortunately, the “free” over-the-air stations demand the retransmission fee. What you should ask for isn’t for an end to Sony collecting the fee but rather an option to not include the “free” over-the-air stations in the first place so that you can get the national service rather than the one with the local channels added.
