Report: 36% of Viewers Had to Get a New TV Subscription to Watch The Super Bowl This Sunday

Football fans everywhere are looking forward to what is arguably THE sporting event of the year, Super Bowl Sunday coming up Feb. 13. But watching the game will come with a price. A new report from Antennas Direct reveals more than 1 in 3 Americans (36%) had to invest in a new TV subscription to watch sports content like the Super Bowl this year, and depending on what service they chose, it doesn’t come cheap.

If viewers opted for traditional pay TV package, 1 in 10 find themselves paying upwards of $176 per month for their subscription. The data reveals the average monthly cost for a traditional cable or satellite TV package is between $76 – $125 a month.

Other stats from the report show that viewers are committed to their football. Even when they need to step away from the game (e.g., for a bathroom break) 47% of fans will bring a mobile device to keep up with the action and/or commercials.

In addition, the Big Game is more than just about watching football. Data shows 76% will watch the game with a group of family members and/or friends, and 45% will engage in some form of betting or gambling on the game in addition to watching it. Plus, nearly half (49%) will watch on multiple screens, like viewing the game on TV while keeping up with social media updates on a smartphone.
