Review: Our Hugely Disappointing Experience with Amazon Services

Latin woman looking disappointed at her laptopscreen, sitting behind her desk at the office.Have you ever needed to hang a TV, fix your computer, or put together a large desk but didn’t want to do it yourself? Amazon wants to be your go-to place for hiring cleaners, assemblers, handymen, electricians, and more.

Many of these services are great for cord cutters, with options like having an outdoor antenna installed to having a flat-screen TV mounted on your wall. You likely have seen the option to buy a TV with professional installation options or have a grill ordered on Amazon assembled for you.

Last month Cord Cutters News decided to put Amazon’s services to the test and ordered three different services to be completed at our new offices. With the move into a new office we decided to have Amazon assemble two new desks and put some new hardware in our video editing PC.

Here is our experience with Amazon Services

Step One: Ordering

Ordering the services was easy, and it gave the option to pick three different time slots. We picked our times, and Amazon told us that they will be getting back to us with a confirmed time slot.

Step Two: Waiting…

We placed the order and waited… We ordered the services on December 26, asking for later that week or the following week to have the services performed.

On December 28, we received an email from Amazon informing us that all three services we had ordered had been cancelled.

Here is the email Amazon sent us:

Amazon Home Services is unable to complete your order #***************. The order has been cancelled and you have not been charged for these services.* We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

That is the only explanation of why all three services had been cancelled.

Final Thoughts

I decided to go with Amazon Services first to review them but also because we trust Amazon to deliver on what they sell. This time Amazon feel well short of what we expected. Although I would understand if one of the services fell through, having all three fall through with no effort whatsoever to offer a later time or date was disappointing.

What was even more surprising is that Amazon is still selling these services in my area. You can find the Amazon office furniture service HERE. You can find the PC computer fan install HERE. If you want to double check our word on that, our office is located in the 76543 zip code.

While we didn’t lose any money, this did leave us scrambling to lineup someone to put together our office furniture. One of the reasons I wanted to have Amazon do it was the fact that I just didn’t have time. With CES next week, the site, and finishing the move into our new office I was looking forward to not worrying about putting the new desks together.

Would we recommend Amazon services?

No. Sadly, we cannot recommend Amazon Services to have your antenna, TV, or any other service performed. I can understand saying the listed times are not available but just cancelling three different services at once left a bad impression and made us far less likely to count on Amazon to perform a professional service for us in the future.

Never even heard of anyone thinking of doing this. People who need help setting up a ROKU, don’t need a Smart TV to begin with. Just an example of a service offered.

Agreed, I have family and friends who bought streamers and called me on how to set them up. I talked them through the setup and told them about the features. I could tell that it was hard for them to grasp the situation. Fast forward to today, they are not using the streaming devices nd have fallen back to the cable/satt that they are accustomed to.

Which is unfortunate. Most cable/satellite boxes offer a ton of services (DVR, On-Demand, etc) that attempts to justify their prices. The customers who can’t figure out a Roku certainly aren’t using those services with their legacy provider’s equipment. In effect, they’re paying an extra $100/month just to flip through numbered channels.

LOL, Amazon can’t even get Prime members their products in the 2 day span when they use their own delivery people coming from their warehouse all of 30 minutes from my house. You seriously expected them to show up and put together things… This is too funny.

Right 50% of the time things are never 2 days delivery!

I seem to have a better experience, all of mine are on time, some (probably about a third) are even early.

Sometimes I like when this happens because I can call and get a free extra month of Prime :).

My first thought was perhaps it was due to the holidays… but since it was 3 different things and, as you said, no reason or options given, that is bad and unexpected from Amazon.

I decided to give it a try last year because of a $20 credit they had for this service. Since we needed a bit of plumbing work completed, this was what we requested. We had three different plumbers respond, so we picked one to come out and take a look at things. They were very good and quickly took care of the issue – even cheaper than I was expecting. I should note this is the only time we have used the service, but it was a good experience.

I have a gift card and used it to get a couple of TV’s hung in my home. My experience was great too. The guy was knowledgeable, got next day service, and I’d use them again if needed. Was actually told about the service by a friend who had plumbing done and her experience was great as well.

Did you at least ask for a free 1-month extension on your Prime membership for the inconvenience and troubles? That’s what I do whenever I have an issue with Amazon and they will at least do that.

Amazon might squash you for this article. They’re pretty big.

This seems really bizarre. Did you ever contact Amazon for an explanation? I had a TV delivered a couple years ago and the guys were really good about it.

That is disappointing to hear. I used Amazon’s services when I purchased a 55″ TV a few months ago and requested that they assist with mounting the TV to my wal. As you mentioned in your article, they provided me with some dates and time slots that would work best for me. I made my selection and within 24 hours I received a response stating that my desired date and time slot was confirmed. Two guys from a local TV mounting service company showed up to my apartment on time and completed the service. I originally thought it would be people that work for Amazon that would be completing the service, but it was an outside company hired by Amazon to complete the service. The guys did a great job and they gave me their business card. I may just go directly through those guys next time I need a TV mounted, but as far as selecting Amazon to coordinate the service that I needed they did a good job.

While you may be the LeBron James of electronics, many users don’t care to become involved with technology setup (especially the elderly). I had the same experience with Amazon Services for gutter cleaning. The best service choice is a small, local business. Ask friends, relatives and neighbors for referrals. Call your local chamber of commerce for trusted service businesses.

My experience with Amazon Services is completely different. I’d recently bought a new computer and was looking for someone to make some custom upgrades. All the local PC repair stores wanted to charge a fortune. I submitted the job to Amazon Services and got two dozen responses. I picked the company with the best reviews and a reasonable price. He showed up on time, was very polite and did the work quickly. The final cost matched his price quote. There were no hidden costs or overages. Amazon handled the payment. And I knew if there was any problems I could file a complaint and get it fixed or get a refund. I’d suggest you give them another chance.

This definitely sounds like an aberration, perhaps due to being around the holidays? Not a great excuse, not sure why they didn’t offer a replacement time.

I’ve used their service to help put together a gas grill and I had a great experience. I can out together a lot of furniture or similar, but I’ve never owned a gas grill before and didn’t want to risk doing it wrong. The installer also talked to me about some basic maintenance stuff which was very helpful to me.

I would definitely recommend their services for that at least.
