This week Roku updated their privacy policy and included a hint at Roku’s future plan for their free streaming service called The Roku Channel. According to the Roku privacy update “Roku may show you personalized ads on non-Roku OTT devices such as third party Smart TVs, set top boxes, media streaming devices, and gaming consoles.”

We have known for some time now that Roku was planning on expanding their free streaming service The Roku Channel to new devices. Recently Roku announced that The Roku Channel would be coming to select Samsung TVs in the summer of 2018. This move was first rumored back in October 2017 but today for the first time Roku is launching The Roku Channel on non-Roku devices or software.

The Roku Channel is a way to watch free movies and TV shows. The service so far has been well received by many cord cutters because it has deals with major studios such as Lionsgate, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Sony Pictures, and Warner Bros. and smaller publishers such as American Classics, Fandor, FilmRise, Nosey, OVGuide, Popcornflix, Vidmark, and YuYu.

Here is a quick look at The Roku Channel:

Roku did not give an exact date for when The Roku Channel will arrive on Samsung smart TVs. According to Scott Rosenberg “Samsung customers should have an entertaining summer ahead of them! The Roku Channel, our popular ad-supported app that brings you Hollywood hit movies and TV for free, is expected to be available on select Samsung smart TVs this summer.”
