Roku TV 8.0 Update Was Released Today – Including The New OTA Grid Guide & More

Over the last few weeks, Roku has updated most of the current Roku line of players including the Roku Stick and Roku Express. Today Roku quietly started to roll out the Roku OS 8.0 update to Roku TVs. So far we have confirmed that the 2017 and 2016 TCL Roku TV lines have been updated.

The major update for the Roku TV is the new OTA grid guide. Here is your first look at the new grid guide in Roku TV OS 8.0.

Update: Not all Roku TVs have been updated. We can confirm our 2016 4K TCL P Series TVs did update last night. Look for the update to roll out over the next few weeks to All Roku TVs. We understand most Roku TVs have not updated at this time. Roku typically rolls these out slowly over the course of a few weeks.

Here are all the new features you will find in the 8.0 Roku update:

New Over-the-Air Grid Guide

Ever wish you had a traditional grid guide on your Roku TV for over-the-air TV? Now you have that option with your Roku TV including a free 14-day look into the future of what is coming up. You will also get a 7-day look back.

Why is the 7-day look back important? If you miss a show, you can go back to it in the guide and your Roku TV will show you other ways to watch it so you never miss an episode again. For example, if you miss an episode of “The Simpsons,” Roku will show you how to find it on Hulu, FOX Now, and more.

Roku Over-the-Air Search

In the past Roku’s over-the-air TV did not show up in its search if you are looking for a movie or TV show. Now if you are looking for a show or movie that will be available over the air it will include the over-the-air option in your search results.

Voice Controls

You can now ask your Roku to switch inputs, load a streaming channel, and more from your Roku app or your voice-enabled remote voice controls on the Roku TV, which are better than ever.

Private Listening OTA

In the past private listening only worked with streaming apps. Now on Roku TVs you can use private listening for over-the-air TV too.

Roku Player Updates

Enhanced Voice Features

Not only can you launch apps with your voice, but you also have a more natural voice search. Want comedies with Will Ferrell? Just say, “show me comedies with Will Ferrell.” Not only will it look for Will Ferrell, but it will also show just comedies he is in.

Single Sign-On

Hate having to sign in every time you open a new TV anywhere app? With Roku you can now sign in once and get access to over 30 TV everywhere apps from providers such as Disney and FOX.

There are no cord cutting services that support this feature yet, but both Dish and AT&T offer it for cable subscribers. Hopefully Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW—among others—will be added soon. As with all new services, look for more companies to sign up soon. (It may be a good idea to email both your streaming service and Roku with a polite request that they add live TV streaming services.)

4K Spotlight Channel

The newly redesigned Roku 4K Spotlight Channel will make it easier for Roku owners who have a 4K and 4K HDR TV to find 4K HDR content on their Roku. All of it will be in one easy-to-find spot.

The Roku OS 8 comes with many back-end improvements and bug fixes. Roku also has a habit recently of not announcing all of the minor changes it made. Back when 7.0 and 7.5 came out both updates had many improvements hidden inside the update for us to find in the future.

If you are getting 14 day guide data, they should be able to add a dvr feature.

DVR feature would cause major licensing issues.

broadcasters hate DVR because it gives people the ability to fast forward commercials. If it is a cloud DVR then Roku will need permission from the broadcasters. They could add the ability to record to flash memory but you would need large drives and that still would cause an issue because Roku has deals with all the broadcasters. It would give leverage to broadcasters and Roku would have to make concessions.

I have 2 Insignia TV’s and no updates on either. I need the update before Vue will update. The slow rollouts drive me crazy.

So they started to roll the update out to Roku TV’s but yet no one with a Roku TV has the update. So where did CordCutter get their information?

  9. Avatar
    TechSupport November 13, 2017 at 1:22 pm #

I haven’t seen one report of any ROKU TV being updated besides CordCutters own test TV. I have two Insignia Roku TV’s and neither have updated. I know that doesn’t mean no one is getting the update but I wonder why we aren’t hearing reports of this.

It would be great if all TV makers would dump their own (rarely updated) smart TV interfaces and just adopt Roku as the default. They would save money in the long run by licensing versus having to develop their own, and it would better serve the consumer.

      TechSupport November 13, 2017 at 1:34 pm #

I hate the cheap built in smart features from manufacturers. So slow and antiquated. To standardize a bit would be a big help. With that said I would rather use Amazon TV instead of Roku. I think the controls and interfaces are better than Roku and you would have the power of Alexa.

This article was about ROKU TV not Roku devices. We all know the devices got the update but no one except for cordcutters has reported an update on their Roku TV. If it was released for Roku TV’s then where are all the reports of people getting it?

A week later, no 8.0 for my TCL’s. Anyone have any luck with getting 8.0 on their smart TV’s?

  16. Avatar
    TechSupport November 20, 2017 at 5:54 pm #

Still no 8.0 for Insignia. What is going on. I wouldn’t care except PlayStation Vue came out with an update months ago that ONLY works with Roku 8.0. I want the new menu on my Roku TV’s. I totally regret buying a TV now with Roku built in. If I knew we would be so far behind the stand alone devices I wouldn’t have gone with Roku TV’s but instead gone with a TV and a separate Amazon TV box. Now I am stuck with Roku for at least 5 years.

It’s December 2017 and still no update for my TCL 4K Roku tv. Still at OS 7.7.0. Any idea when we can expect to see it? An expected date would be nice since the original date of the end of November has come and gone.
