(Update: Added info about Samsung’s newest Smart Monitor)

CES 2022 may not be unfolding quite how organizers had originally hoped, but companies like Samsung are still at-the-ready with product announcements to kick off the new year. For 2022, the electronics giant is touting improvements to its Neo QLED line, new features for its smart TVs, and a remote that can charge via solar during the day and your router’s radio waves at night.

Neo QLED

For 2022, Samsung is adding new features and capabilities to its Neo QLED line of 4K and 8K displays. Among the new additions is what the company is calling Shape Adaptive Light Control and something called Object Depth Enhancer, which uses artificial intelligence to try and sharpen foreground objects to help them stand out more.

New Smart TV Features

On the smart TV front, Samsung’s software platform continues to evolve. The main draw is a new home screen that offers quicker access to streaming services, a Gaming Hub to centralize console and stream-based gaming options, and an Ambient Mode for a variety of screen saver options. Those options include displaying your favorite art, photos, or your NFT (non-fungible token) collection. Yes, Samsung is getting into the NFT space by letting you browse, purchase, and display your art collection with what it’s calling the NFT Aggregation Platform.

A Watch Together option lets you set up virtual watch parties with family and friends. Samsung says you just need to connect a camera from a compatible smart device to start using the new feature.

In addition to the new Gaming Hub, Samsung is also releasing a 4K model with support for 144Hz refresh rates, which could be of interest to gamers looking for a new display with a high refresh rate.

The Frame and MicroLED

Samsung’s also tweaking some of its higher-end lines, like the design-focused The Frame and the massive MicroLED screens. For The Frame, the company is offering a new anti-reflective screen that offers a more matte-like finish to make displayed artwork look more realistic. The line also gets a new user experience Samsung is calling its Art Store UX — the goal there is to make browsing and selecting artwork easier.

For its modular MicroLED line, Samsung is adding a smaller 89-inch model to go along with the existing 99- and 110-inch preconfigured options.

New Eco Remote

Last, but not least, Samsung’s updating its Eco Remote to include a new way to charge the device. In addition to using its embedded solar panel during the day, the new Eco Remote can harvest energy from radio waves, like the ones coming off your WiFi router, so it can charge at night as well.

Smart Monitor M8

Samsung also announced a new addition to its Smart Monitor line. The display mashes up traditional computer monitors with smart TV capabilities, which could be appealing to work-from-home types who need a sizable display for work and easy access to streaming apps after hours.

The new M8 offers a 32-inch screen and a webcam up top for meetings. The company is also touting reduced overall thickness compared to the 2021 model, and a white color scheme that might be a better fit in kitchens and dining rooms that are pulling double duty as home offices during the day.

Samsung hasn’t shared pricing or availability details just yet, but we’ll keep an eye out for updates.
