New data from Strategy Analytics reports that the global number of streaming devices and connected TVs in households has surpassed 1.1 billion. With so many people cutting the cord and turning to streaming services as their primary source for TV and entertainment, it’s not hard to see why.
Of those 1.1 billion devices, Samsung makes up the majority with 14% of devices in use. In second place is Sony with 12%, followed by LG with 8%, and Hisense, TCL, and Amazon Fire TV each with 5%. With such a wide range of brands and devices on the market, Samsung’s leading 14% is a pretty good-sized chunk of the market share.
“Over-the-top TV and video streaming to the TV is a complex and evolving landscape compared to mobile devices, where only two platforms dominate,” David Watkins, director at Strategy Analytics, said in a statement.
“Over the next decade or so we expect Internet streaming to dominate consumption of television and video content across much of the world,” he said. “This research reflects the early stages in the evolution of the platforms which will come to dominate this ecosystem for many years to come.”
Samsung has a fairly wide range of CTV devices and even has pioneered branching out into aesthetically pleasing offerings within its Lifestyle series, most recently announcing The Premiere, a new 4K, ultra-short throw projector launching later this year.
