Silicondust Reports Slight Delay for its ATSC 3.0 Tuner

Silicondust says a manufacturing issue with the first batch of its ATSC 3.0 tuner will delay deliveries slightly. The company says July deliveries will shift to the following month, while August shipments will now occur later in the month.

The news came via an update on the company’s Kickstarter campaign for its HDHomeRun QUATRO 4K. The device includes four total tuners, with two able to receive the new ATSC 3.0 broadcasting standard that’s gradually being launched in markets around the country.

Silicondust’s Nick Kelsey said in an update that the company discovered problems while testing the first 1,000 units that were manufactured. The issue, he said, is understood and new sample units are expected next week.

Despite the setback, interest in the HDHomeRun QUATRO 4K remains high. If Silicondust’s campaign is any indication — they’ve surpassed their $50,000 goal 12 times over — external ATSC 3.0 tuners should play a large role as consumers without compatible TVs look to access over-the-air content via the new standard.

A handful of TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners built in are on the market, with more on the way, but for many who aren’t interested in purchasing a new TV soon, these external tuners are likely the next best option.

In the meantime, Kelsey says the company continues to monitor the ongoing deployments of ATSC 3.0 in key markets across the country.

“The good news — Las Vegas, Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Salt Lake City have started test broadcasts. We are following developments closely,” he said in this week’s update.
