Sling TV Updating Their App, Address Playback Issues And Adds Parental Controls

Sling_Television_logo_white_webreadySling TV will release a new version of their app, across all platforms, to address issues experienced during the NCAA Tournament and other peak viewing times like The Walking Dead.

Here are the 3 main improvements you should notice:

  1. Various enhancements to reduce overhead and load on servers. This will allow them to provide a more seamless experience to all subscribers during periods of heavy viewership.
  2. Addition of parental controls across all channels that give subscribers the ability to manage TV shows by rating.
  3. Mini guide updates that make it easier for subscribers to find shows by subject/genre on the following devices: Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire TV Stick, Roku players, Roku TV models and Xbox One.

Sling TV made these changes to help its subscribers have a smooth viewing experience when the service brings out their HBO package later this week.

No exact date has been set for the release of the update, but it should be in the new few days. Sling TV plans to have the update, and HBO package, available for the premier of Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley on Sunday.

“It is has always been our desire to make the HBO subscription widely accessible,” said Tom Woodbury, President of Global Distribution, HBO.  “Sling TV is a part of that ongoing evolution and we believe HBO is a great addition to the platform.”

Unlike HBO, Sling TV’s HBO Now package is available on Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, current-generation Roku players, Roku TV models, Android and iOS devices, Xbox One, and Mac and PC; opening up the service to a large number of consumers that, until this release, have not had access to HBO Now.

Sling TV’s “Best of Live TV” $20 core package delivers ESPN, ESPN2, AMC, A&E, TNT, History Channel, H2, TBS, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, IFC, El Rey, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, ABC Family, Disney Channel, CNN, Lifetime and Galavision. This package additionally features access to WatchESPN, including ESPN3 and an array of VOD entertainment.

Customers can choose to tailor their entertainment experience with the addition of HBO for $15 per month, or the optional “Sports Extra,” “Hollywood Extra,” “Kids Extra,” “Lifestyle Extra” and “World News Extra” add-ons, each priced at $5 per month. In addition to live channels and VOD entertainment Sling TV customers also have access to content from Maker Studios.
