Cutting the cable connection to coax connector illustrating people cancelling cable TV serviceThis week at the Denver Pay TV Show, Joel Espelien, a senior analyst at TDG opened up about their cord cutting studies. One of the most interesting was a look at what finally made people move to cord cutting.

Often people have been thinking about cord cutting and plan to do it, but TDG recently did a survey on what was the final straw that pushed them into cutting the cord.

Here is what people said pushed them over the edge to become a cord cutter:

  • Price Hike From Their Current Provider: 29.6%
  • Rethinking Their Budget: 29.6%
  • Frustrating Moment With Current Provider: 16%
  • Contract Ends: 11.6%
  • Current Provider Dropped a Channel They Wanted: 8.6%
  • Other: 3.1%

While price is still a big part of what pushes people into cord cutting, over 40% of Americans became a cord cutter for some other reason.

What is most interesting is that a majority of the talk about what to do about cord cutting has been cost. That leaves the door open to services that may not be the cheapest but can address the frustration cable TV customers have now.
