T-Mobile Is Testing 500 Mbps in New York City

T-Mobile has recently been investing into the speed of their networks. Now they are using a new system called Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) in New York City. According to the Ookla’s Milan Milanovic, these new tests are bringing T-Mobile users 500 Mbps down.

This is not 5G that T-Mobile says they plan to launch later this year in markets like New York City. What T-Mobile is doing is sending a 4G LTE signal over unused 5Ghz Wi-Fi networks to access the bandwidth there.

Because of the limited reach of 5Ghz this solution is for dense urban areas because signals drop after about four blocks or a bit over 1,000 feet. In highly congested areas like New York City that often see speeds drop this new LAA system will help address a growing issue of poor 4G speeds.

You will need a LAA-supported device such as T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S8, Note 8, Galaxy S8 Active, the new Galaxy S9/S9+, LG V30, and the unlocked Huawei Mate 10 Pro.
